A question for the techs: I do my editing on a relatively new (<1yr) Dell XPS 8940 desktop equipped with:
- 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-11700K @ 3.60GHz 3.50 GHz
- 64GB of RAM
- Integrated Intel UHD 750 display adapter
- GeForce RTX 3060 GPU (with a creative "studio" driver)
Despite the fact that this hardware should be more than enough to handle type of editing and motion graphics work that I do, I have a persistent problem where the GPU 3D reading for both display adapters will spike to 100% and cause the following sequence of things to occur: program freezes, screen goes black for a moment, screen comes back, program monitors appear whited out. This happens typically when I'm doing something basic like doing color grade adjustments, or maybe working with some slight blurs in After Effects or the like, but nothing that far less robust hardware builds that I've used haven't been able to handle with no such problems. This also happened today when i was just moving some raw 1080 footage around in my premiere timeline. It happens regardless of whether I have other GPU intensive programs open or not.
I've run diagnostics on both cards and neither show a problem. Dell thought it might be a problem with the integrated Intel motherboard card, so they replaced the whole motherboard, but that didn't help. Software diagnostics and troubleshooting with Dell aren't covered under my care package so I'm hoping that someone here might have some ideas since this problem only seems to happen with Premiere and After Effects.
Any insights would be appreciated!

Hi Keith,
Sounds rather weird. What kind of footage are you editing? Have you run Premiere Pro on this computer in the past? What happens if you run no other applications and have all browsers closed?
Thanks,
Kevin

Hi. The footage is AVCHD (.MTS) format, in 1080HD, 23.96fps shot on Canon C100s in Clog 1. I've been using premeire pro on this computer since I purchased it back in February of this year. The problem (GPU 100% use spike, program freeze, black screen, screen returns with whited out program windows) occurs regardless of whatever else is running in the background. And, as mentioned, it also occurs if I'm using After Effects (with or without other programs running).

Hi Keith5CC5,
Sorry about that. I suspect that this legacy footage is the problem. Try a test by transcoding the footage to an editing codec, like ProRes LT. Is it working better now? Let me know.
Thanks,
Kevin
