Help encoding AVI interlaced YUV2 4:2:2 to MPEG 2 interlaced output

New Here ,
Dec 22, 2021 Dec 22, 2021

I have captured VHS home videos to an AVI file in YUV2 4:2:2 NTSC 720x480.  I am trying to encode using Adobe Media Encoder but am having issues because the program keeps thinking the source file is progressive.  When I use mediainfo, it clears shows the source file is interlaced.

I have tried many settings but it basically bois down to this:

- at 29.97 and upper field first I get jagged lines wheneve the camera pans

- if I set 59.94 I get rid of the jagged lines but my output is now interlaced - I would rather keep it interlaced to avoid the artifacts I get from deinterlacing.  I have also read there are other tools that will deinterlace better.

Is there a way to keep this interlaced but avoid the jagged lines when the camera pans?

Please help.

Why are you using Media Encoder? It sounds like a headache with bad results. I use an interlaced sequence if I am going to output to DVD or Blu-ray. Otherwise I use a 60P sequence for social media and Premiere Pro does the rest. Below is a video of my technique. Towards the end you can see if the image quality looks good enough for your needs.

I used to use Encore but I have not had to create a DVD or Blu-ray disk in about 3 years. I kind of stopped freelancing about 3 years ago. That being said DVD and Blu-ray discs are still needed and I wish Adobe would bring back Encore or give us a replacement. I want to create a 4K UHD Blu-ray for my own personal needs. The integration between Premiere Pro and Encore made it a much better option than the competition.

I realize this is a side issue to the main question. Encore maxed out at HD/BD. No UHD/4K.

I know Encore could not burn Ultra High Defintion Blu-ray disks. Someone asked me a question. I simply stated I want to burn Ultra High Defintion Blu-ray disks. I never stated Encore could do it but Adobe should give us that option. Not one month goes by without someone wanting to burng a DVD or Blu-ray disks. Why do you think that is?

As long as there are still baby boomers there will always be a market for dvds and blurays.

At the risk of wandering too far off-topic, maybe DVDs and Blu-Ray Discs will make a comeback with newer generations just like vinyl did. There's something about placing a record on a turntable and holding that LP jacket in your hands that cannot be duplicated by digital media. I think the same may one day be said about streaming media.

In addition, once the disc is in your hand, no change in licensing can take away your ability to play it (RIP Divx). Any fan of Vera and Midsomer Murders can attest to that travesty.
