How can you have Premiere Pro recognize and enable proxy files of sub-clips?

I am editing a short film that was shot on a RED Epic in 6K. The audio was recorded separately. In organizing the media in Premiere Pro I first imported the .R3D files and the audio files. I then connected all of the .R3D files to the proxy files that were shot along side internally on the camera. These proxy files were recorded in 2K Apple Prores 422. I then took the master clips and brought them into a sequence where I then manually synced the video with the external audio that was recorded. Next, I went through each of the clips and created sub-clips of the .R3D file and the audio file and renamed them based on the format of SceneNumber_ShotLetter_TakeNumber (e.g. 2A_02).

I then started editing the project with the sub-clips, creating in and out points on them in the source monitor and bringing them into the sequence. The sequence that I created changed its settings to match that of the .R3D file so it is in 6K.

As I started editing the project I started out by editing it by scene, with each scene being a different sequence. I noticed it was slow, but if I dropped the resolution to 1/8 or 1/16 it played back well. Now that I have finished the rough cut of all the scenes and put them into the final sequence to start editing it together it has slowed down dramatically, to the point where it is dropping frames at 1/16 resolution.

I have gone back and checked and realized that when I open up the first sequence where I synced all of the files I could see the noticeable difference in quality with the original source files when I turn the proxy button on and off. This makes sense because we are going from a 6K image to a 2K image. However, when I look at the sub-clip brought into the timeline there is no difference when the proxy clip is enabled.

I then went to the project window and under metadata display clicked on the proxy tab to show the status. On the original .R3D files I imported it shows that proxy file is attached. When I look at the sub-clips that I created it doesn't display any information. When I select a sub-clip and right click on it and scroll down to attach proxies the option is grayed out and I am not able to do anything with it.

It seems that when you create sub-clips Premiere Pro doesn't source the proxy files of the original source files. Is there a way around this to make this work that I am missing? Or, is there a different way that I should have originally set up my media files?

Editing on 15" Mid 2014 MacBook Pro Retina 2.8GHz Core i7 with 16GB RAM and 1.0TB Flash. Project files are on a USB 3.0 hard drive. Memory render is set to open CL. Cache files and scratch disks are set to the USB 3.0 drive.

I just posted a similar question before finding yours. It's not just that Premiere doesn't source the proxy of the original file, it renders the ENTIRE length of the original file for EACH proxy. MADDENING!!! This means I'm chilling my heals for hours until 100+ subclips are transcoded.

It looks like you created subclips before attaching proxies. You have to attach proxies before making subclips. If you create subclips then attach proxies to your original media, the subclips do not automatically connect to the source attached proxies.
