How to compress applauses?

Community Beginner ,
Jul 13, 2019 Jul 13, 2019

I work recording audio conferences where the audience applauds a lot, and then I play my recordings in another auditorium. But the applauses become too mucho loud in the recordings (I use an excelent pair of speakers) and it hurts the ears of all the listeners, because the sound go until the peak and it bursts. When I use the compressor normally on my mixer (I use a soundcraft ui12 to play my audios), it compress also the conferencist´s voice, because sometimes the applauses are weaker, less stronger, than the conferencist´s voice, but their frequence is higher so it appears that they are louder.

Can I resolve this with a premiere pro audio effect?

Thank you!

Do you plan on doing it again in the future ?

I use a line in recorder in the mixer, but the audience is too close from the conferencist.

It sounds almost like you are recording someone with an audience in one room and at the same time ( live ) playing it in another room …

If so, the best way to control sound would be how you place the microphones. One for speaker and some other one for 'ambient' sound of applauses.  If you can control the levels of those mics then you can get a decent 'mix' of the two different sound sources … and route the sound to the other room.

If you are, instead, recording the sound and then playing at a later date in another room, the same applies re: placement of mics... but you can use AUDITION to fine tune the sound recording better than you can by using PPRO , which is a video and sound editing program ( usually augmented by audition and other programs to add value to the edit )

good luck !

This might be interesting for you ….

When people shoot live SITCOMS ( for broadcast on TV ) the audience comes into the stage and are seated before the show starts.

Someone is hired to entertain the 'guest audience' ( like a clown act, but usually it's a comedian ) while they are waiting for the show to start.  There is a prompter screen that tells the audience when to laugh, when to clap, when to do stuff.. like 'cheer'. They are told beforehand to be quiet during the shooting of the show UNLESS prompted to do what the screen tells them to do.

There is NO ( ZERO ) spontaneous reactions from the audience. It sounds like it is spontaneous when you watch it on TV but it is NOT.

Another ( very important ) thing that is done before the show starts... the sound people ( sound dept, ) point microphones at the audience and they ask them to do the following... while they record sound.....

a) please, all the men in the audience clap your hands in applause for 30 seconds....

b) please, all the women in the audience clap your hands in applause for 30 seconds ….

c) please, all the men in the audience laugh for 30 seconds.....

d) please, all the women in the audience laugh for 30 seconds..

e) please, all the men and women in audience clap for 30 seconds...

f ) please, all the men and women in the audience laugh for 30 seconds....

Yes, it's true... it is wild track... and is used to edit into the show later on ….along with what they get from the SCREEN PROMPTS ...

Think about that.   Then think about how you can implement any of those things for your own recordings....

That sounds sorta dry and scientific ( audience directions ) , but it's not. They are definitely into contributing and being part of the show. The live stuff is usually shot ( each scene ) in ONE TAKE. The actors have to be right on with their lines and acting, and they get a huge energy from the live audience. They LOVE playing in front of a live audience !  And the audience can TELL … it is a very fun and high energy kind of thing, unlike anything else ( live theatre etc. ),  The sets are right there lined up side by side in front of audience, and the only breaks are costume changes, etc. and that is done fast,  It's kinda fun for everyone.

In fact, actually I´m using new mic´s and a good mixer, but I have thousands os audios, recorded in the past, that I have to us (seminary, presentations, conferences...) now a days. I´m not interest in the present, but in the past. I can´t throw away all what I already did.

I have Premiere and Audition installed, but I don´t know what kind of effect I can use to the resolve my problem. Help please!

What I said in the second paragraph, that the applauses are weaker, less stronger, than the conferencist´s voice, but their frequence is higher so it appears that they are louder, it´s just some moments. In the major part of the time, the applauses are higer (in db meter) than the conferencist´s voice, so I think that it´s easier to resolve. So, in another words, how can I compress just the applauses? If I could edit my recordings, at least, when the db of the conferencist´s voice it´s lower than the applauses, I´m going to be very happy!

Thank you!

This would probably be easier in Audition.

At any rate, you would need to find a way to separate the voice from the applause, and if the bulk of the applause is a higher frequency that's a great thing.

Then use a compressor or limiter effect or combination on the applause frequencies.

You need to get a tool with a frequency display up, and watch both straight voice and then applause sections. Note the frequencies of the applause that are different than most of the vocal frequencies.

Target a reduction via EQ settings or a compressor or limiter effect on the applause frequencies.

Once you have a useful effect, save as a preset, then it should probably work over entire clips.

You may need to read up on using the effects and tools in Audition, and look at the Help tutorials for that app. Also, Jason Levine has a YouTube channel with many things like this demonstrated .

you want to use audition.  nobody knows but YOU what recording specs you have,,, are they mp3, wav, studio wav ?  you probably know that you will get best adjustments with a nice wav file .

The EQ in audition, high pass and low pass and a bunch of other stuff you can experiment with will at least IMPROVE what you have, if not altogether fix it.

good luck !

Well, I have mp3 files. But I can´t do it manually beacause every has in average 1 hour 1/2, with a lot of applause... There´s an automatic way?

you might even be able to use some section of JUST APPLAUSE as room tone, and see if that helps ( eliminate the room tone.. see how it effects the voice )
