How to create vertically rolling text confined to lower third

Rather than a horizontal scroll, I am trying to create a rolling text (credits) confined to the lower third rather than have it roll up the entire frame. We want to show a list of content for a class at the bottom of the screen, rolling vertically over a lower-third graphic while the video advertising fills the monitor above. I'm stumped. Any ideas?

Hi Robert

This can be accomplished in a couple of ways. The easiest would be in After Effects. Make a comp with your lower third as a layer. Duplicate that layer and name it "matte". Make a text layer underneath that matte layer and assign it's TrkMat pulldown to the matte layer. Then just keyframe your text movement and it will show only where the matte layer allows it to. (see attached)

You can also use one layer as a matte for another in Premiere Pro. Using the Track Matte Key effect, duplicate your lower third and put that duplicate above your text. Apply the Track Matte Key effect and assign the Matte to the layer with your duplicate on it. It will use that layer's alpha channel to matte out your text. Animate your text as desired. (see attached)

Another way to do it is to create the text in Photoshop and import that file into Premiere Pro.

Put the text on a track above the video and add the crop effect as desired. Keyframe the position to make it scroll.
