How to export and import video settings

Community Beginner ,
Jul 01, 2019 Jul 01, 2019

Could anyone clarify me about one question/doubt

I am editing a video shot with Anamorphic lenses. All done.

Now I want to export it and import in a new project so I can make the final color grade, etc.. OR send the final file for another person to ColorGrade and finish the video.

What would be the best practice to export it? I am quite in doubt about the settings on the export panel for importing it again on my main project. Especially about the "Basic Video Settings" And "Video codec". I guess the settings would be different for the normal export for YouTube/Facebook and so.

Thanks a lot

To send down the line for further work such as color would either be using a high-quality interframe codec or exporting an EDL or XML file of the sequence plus a low-quality export of the sequence. The down-line editor/fx/color/audio/whatever person then uses the EDL or XML file to conform the original media within their program and uses the low-q export as a simple check to make sure all cuts/ramps/resizing are correct in their conformed project.

It is simpler to export a high-q file. Slightly higher quality may be gained by going the EDL/XML conform route. Especially if some of the media is high-k framesize.

Who and within what program do you expect to do color?

What is the final audience  ... which would include the specifics for the deliverables you need to end up with?

Hi Neil,

thanks for the answer.

Well the first option would be to export a high quality file and import it within my project as a new sequence in Premiere PRO if I have to do the color grade myself. If so, how would be the best settings? QuickTime Apple ProRes?

The second option would be to export and send it to someone else. Then I dont know what the person would be using.

That would be the wrong thing to do.  Just switch to the Color workspace and do the grading in the same project.

It would be great to do all in the same sequence if the computer could handle it!

I do prefer to have one final edit and color grade ir in a separate project or sequence.

The think I dont know is how should I export it.

If your machine can't handle the effects, use Cineform proxies.  They're good enough to use for color correction/grading.

Work offline using proxy media |

You can always duplicate the sequence before doing the color work so you have a raw slate to fall back on.

In that case, you'll want to use the Project Manager to create a new project with only your final sequence in it. Here is an in-depth writeup on how it works. Like Neil is suggesting with XMLs and EDLs, this keeps your footage from being compressed by doing a media export. Once you have your final sequence in its own project, then you can switch to the Color workspace as Jim suggests.
