How to get smoother footage - slowed down on Timeline

I have some HD 1080/1920 footage shot in 50 fps Progressive mode (MP4).

The footage is taken looking out of a coach window so in normal speed the foreground was going too fast to watch.

80% speed was about right and I used Optical Flow setting when rendered.

Trouble is these still looks a but 'stuttering'. This is on the Exported file as well. It is subtle but not comfortable to watch.

On the Timeline there are no dropped frames and I always render short bits of editing as I go along.

I tried Frame Blending which makes it look worse.

Does anyone out there have any tips to help improve this.

My final Export of the Production with either be as HD 50fps mp4 for On line - or a Blu Ray disc 25fps Interlaced PAL for UK HD.

Thanks

If it is too fast to watch you wont get it right by slowing it down.

Might need something like Twixtor to get it right.

Post example or upload to test

Hello Ann, thanks for your prompt reply. I agree with you it will never be perfect. The coach was not travelling that fast but in retrospect I should have been filming in Slo Mo which on the Osmo POcket is 180fps I think. Trouble is youi don't always have time to chnage settings. I'll post a section of the clip later when I get access to it. I might just slow it down more, edit it and apply optical flow. That will be a compromise. I was only wondering if there was a better way. I have not come across Twixtor but will search for it.

I often shoot in 60p, but then edit in a 30p Sequence in Premiere. I can then apply 50% speed (to select clips that I want slowed) and there is no stuttering or repeated frames since the extra frames from the original 60p source all get utilized, meaning every frame is unique during playback with nothing being created or interpolated.

I can't speak to how the motion blur might look for you (depends on shutter speed you shot with), but try using a 25P Sequence to edit the 50P footage and then apply your slow speed in the timeline as desired. And of course also export then as 25p, you might be surprised with the results

Thanks

Jeff

I find that rendering does not always give you the same quality that you'll get when you export.  What I sometimes do is just export the section of the timeline for that clip at full quality and edit the export on top of the clip.  Also, if you have the full cc suite, you might try replacing with After Effects Composition and setting frame blending to pixelmotion...

also, sometimes tweaking the speed slightly may give you better results

Thanks to all for input on this. Twixtor looks interesting but  a bit out of my budget range for this case.

I'll try editing and exporting just the clip and bring it back in as a 'Exported Clip'.

I will also try the edit in 25p as well.

The final export (if being done for BluRay PAL) will always Export at 25Fps interleaved though.
