How to split audio into two audio tracks that is already on the timeline

As standard we recorded lav and boom mic and it is showing in premiere in one track. I went ahead edited the audio thinking I can just separate the lav from boom later. But I am slowly coming to realization that it can only be on the original clip in the project window. How screwed I am? Do I have to recut everything? There is just under 3h of interviews....

I was hoping someone else might suggest a clever method. But since you have not gotten a response, I'll comment.

I assume you want them separate in the end to adjusts levels or similar, and that all the audio you want is still in the timeline.

I'm assuming the audio is currently all on Audio 1 and it is linked to video that is all on Video 1. This method might work even if it is not, but might take more work.

Drag + Select all the audio in the timeline. The video will also be selected, but as long as it is in Video 1, it won't matter. Alt + Drag down, which will copy the audio onto Audio 2.

You now have identical audio on 2 tracks, and one of them is still linked to one of the audio tracks.

Open the Audio Clip Mixer. (I don't know whether I prefer the clip mixer or track mixer. For me it would depend on what I am going to do with the audio adjustments.)

Set Audio 1 to full left and Audio 2 to full right.

I mostly want to turn off lav and just leave boom mic and this seems like a nice work around. Thank you!

If you just want the left or right channel, try adding the Fill Left with Right or Fill Right with Left audio effect (under Audio Effects > Special).  This will make the left or right channel play through both without having to mess with them manually.  Might be a quick way to get what you are looking for...

I'm not familiar with that (I'm a one-person shop), so I defer to Richard.  But assuming he's correct, I presume you can just tell your finisher to ignore the track with the lav audio...

I would send the post house everything. If you want to mute the lav track while editing just add the fill effect to the dialogue track in the track mixer. This will let you hear just the boom mic but will not change any of the clips.

You might have to be careful if you are going to send your project for audio finishing. Some of the edl type exports will split the audio to mono tracks and you might end up with tons of duplication.

So would that mean, if I do AAF export to send to Audio finish I should not worry about turning lav off now (it has some crackles) and leave it for the person who does it?

I agree with Swindler on using the fill effect for your purpose - much simpler. And with Richard re passing it all on to the finisher.
