How to transcode after timeline built

Hi

At first my laptop was dealing well with 4k from my sony a99ii, but after I've dropped many clips to the time time, the computer is slowing down. So I want to transcode my files to 1080p, but I don't want to redo my timeline. So in other words, I want to transcode the files in my folder but without changing their names. I want premier to reopen the original time line. Is this doable?

If I understand the problem this is the exact reason Premiere instituted the proxy workflow. You can generate lower rez files and PP will handle the swapping for you. You can do all your work on the proxies and then tell PP to swap in the full-size files at render.

Take a look at these 2 links for help:

I agree with Brian.  Use the new Proxy feature.  Use the included GoPro Cineform presets only.  You will notice a markedly better editing experience, and the original high quality media will be automatically used for final export.

A quick follow-up question:

If I pull in a clip to the timeline that I want to colour-grade (in Premiere), if I grade it and then create a proxy, will Premiere remember that grade for the final export?

I'm having trouble understanding at what stage to colour grade.

Thank you.

You can grade the proxies.

When exporting AME will use the original files with all the effects.

Thank you for the reply.

Having never done this, is grading the proxies visually accurate due to them being lower quality?

The proxies are a lower frame-size ... but that is the only lower quality thing about them. They will visually grade the same, and of course, you can check that quickly as at any moment, even during playback, you can click on the proxy toggle button in the Program monitor to switch from original to proxy to original to your heart's content.
