I try to leave the sequence setting "composite in linear color" turned on when working in Premiere to get more accurate shading with blending modes. However, the math of this causes smooth dissolves to follow an inverse gamma curve, causing the dissolve to start very quickly, and slow down towards the end. I've also noticed a color shift when the opacity isn't at 0 or 100 for a layer: the image below shows what should be white text over blue at various opacities. On the left, the word "test" is composited with non-linear color and looks 'as expected', matching AE. The word "text", on the right is with the linear workflow and has a slight color shift.
I understand that there are third party plugins for Premiere that give smooth dissolve transitions with a linear color workflow. However, when working with more complex graphics rendered from external applications, there isn't really a good workaround that I'm aware of.
Should I just turn linear compositing off for jobs with graphical overlays, or is there a more elegant solution out there? I'm able to get smooth transitions when working in a linear workspace in AE - is this a bug within Premiere, color math that hasn't been implemented properly?

Version 25.5 (just released) has a new dissolve transition by Film Impact.
I haven't tried it yet, but it is supposed to be better than the one previously included.
