Mixed video resolutions

I have a 4K 24fps sequence and I'd like to add some slow motion with 120fps, though the camera only shoots 120fps at 1080p. Is my only option to down convert all of the 4k footage to 1080p and put everything into a 1080p sequence?

Thanks

Alternative you could give AE's Detail Preserving Upscale a twirl if it just a few clips.

You could put the 1080p in a 4K sequence but that usually means qualityloss on the 1080p footage.

Best is to use 1080p sequence.

You don't need to down-convert. Just put it in the timeline and Set to Frame size. Then you will have some room to re-frame if necessary.

If I want to keep the sequence at 4k would I Set to Frame size for the 1080p clips? Is that the best option?

Thanks.

No its not as I already explained in my first post.

Putting 1080p in a 4K sequence means upscaling and image quality loss.

Televisions and other devices do a much better job with visually up-scaling things than you can do by scaling the media itself. Actually, a lot of what you see on-screen in theaters is for example 1920x1080 essentially. Some is higher res in some theaters.

No.

Don't down-convert, no reason to. Simply create a 1080 sequence as the frame-rate you want, then drag/drop the 4k onto it and use the preference to "Set to frame-size" so it doesn't re-scale the media, just down-sizes in auto-mode. As then you have full options to scale those clips manually without losing any resolution. "Scale to ... " is an option I never ever use.

No, you have other options but you may not be happy with the results.

One is to scale up the 1080p footage to fill the UHD frame, but this will acerbate any compression artifacts and the image will be softened considerably.

Another option would be to put the 1080p footage into the sequence at its correct scaling so that it results as a smaller image within the UHD frame. You can use some other material as a background and place the slomo footage in as a box on top of it.

If you choose to edit at 1080p so that all images fill frame and are not upscaled, then you don't have to down convert the 4K source footage prior to editing - you set the Sequence to 1080p and set the preference for Default Media Scaling to Set to Frame Size. The 4K footage will then be autoscaled to fit the smaller frame.
