Motion Graphics template changing the brightness of my video?

I'm using the simple and bold corporate slides template and when I place my footage in the media replacement it brightens up / whites out my video. When I attempt to adjust the brightness or use the lumetri color panel, it seems to be changing overall brightness of the entire video/template instead of just lowering the exposure for the video... any ideas please??
