Mouse pointer not lining up

Participant ,
Jan 12, 2017 Jan 12, 2017

I'm not sure how to describe this one but my mouse pointer doesn't line up correctly in PP version 2017.0.1

If I try and drag an item into a bin for example it will not end up in the bin I'm hovering over, rather one two bins below it. If I try and drag a clip on the timeline I cannot pick it up without holding the mouse button down right at the top of the clip rather than the middle of it.

It seems like the vertical alignment of the mouse is off by about 1 centimetre - this is only a problem in Adobe, the machine is fine (27 inch, mid 2011 3.4 Ghz i7 32GB)

It's making it very difficult to edit!

Any ideas?

A.

Happily but also frustratingly in a way the problem has vanished this morning - could be that installing the older version of CC plus a hard reset of the machine has 'woken' it up.

Thank you for your help - hopefully it doesn't happen again!

Can you post a screen recording of this happening? Do you have any special software for your mouse, if so, have you tried disabling it temporarily? Did this just start happening in 2017.0.1 or has this always been a problem for you?

tricky to display something that isn't happening. When I hover the mouse over areas I'd expect it to change to a window resize, for example, it doesn't change and I can't resize the window. When I pick up a clip and drag it, I will get the circular 'no' sign unless I move the mouse and drop the clip while the mouse if hovering over the very top of a timeline track. Hard to describe.

It's only just started happening, I've tried restarting the machine and taking batteries out of the mouse. The same problem occurs with the graphics tablet though so it's not the mouse or tablet it's a software issue.

Are you up to date on whichever version of MacOS you're on? What happens if you install Premiere CC 2015 just to test? If you're unfamiliar with how to do that you can check out this article: Download and install Creative Cloud apps

I'm on El Capitan - so not quite Sierra. Can't go back to CC2015, none of my projects will work 😕

Is this only happening on existing projects in CC 2017, or even new ones? I just meant that you should test to see if this is happening at all in CC 2015, not necessarily on a project you already made.

Well that's something. It definitely means it's localized to the software, but CS6 is so old that it's not actually helpful measure. The last version before 2017 came out (2015.3 or 2015.4) would be more useful. If it's not happening in either of those then I would try trashing your preferences in 2017 to see if that helps.

ok, reinstalling 2015.3 or .4 sounds painful.

I've tried deleting preferences but it didn't work, thanks for trying.

What makes you think it's painful? It downloads in the background and is easy enough to look at quickly. You can have multiple (major) releases of CC apps installed, and you can easily enough uninstall it after. Unfortunately, this is part of diagnosing problems, and I think it's a lot less painful than continuing to deal with the irritating sounding issue you're encountering.

Ok, I've installed CC 2015 .4 - it does not have the same issue.

Thanks for doing that. Given that we know the issue is completely localized to CC 2017, have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling it? Also, if you choose do to this, when you uninstall I would not keep your preferences when the CC app asks.

Also, I still think it would be helpful to see a screen recording of this happening. I know you said it's tricky to display something that isn't happening, but simply clicking recording you clicking on certain buttons would be enough to demonstrate the problem. Often times screen recordings can be very telling and the smallest thing can stand out which helps solve the problem. Of course, sometimes they don't help at all, but that's far less often the case.

Alternatively, you could try creating a new temporary user account, launching Premiere, and seeing if the problem occurs. If it doesn't then that means there's something local to your account and maybe there's a set of preferences that didn't get trashed properly.

Thank you for taking the time to help.

I will lose some LUTs (which were fiddly to install) and Keyboard shortcuts if I reinstall 2017 - is there anything else to try first?

I'm not sure I've junked the preferences correctly - can you explain how to do that? I followed some instructions online but they didn't accurately match what I was seeing.

You can try my last suggestion of creating a test user account if you don't want to uninstall.

You can also sync your preferences via Creative Cloud to preserve your KB shortcuts or you could even back up the prefs manually. If you still have your keyboard shortcuts after trying to clear your preferences before then you didn't get rid of everything. While Premiere is starting up hold Shift+Option to clear your preferences, but note that it will wipe out those custom settings, so definitely sync your prefs to Creative Cloud first. Where did you install your custom LUTs? I don't know if those get wiped out too; it depends where they live.

If you want to be even more judicious about backing your prefs up, go to the path in this screenshot. Back up that entire "profile-username" folder somewhere else and then clear your preferences. You can always restore the folder later or even just your KB shortcuts which will be inside the "Mac" folder.

If you do sync your preferences with Creative Cloud then there will be another folder called "Profile-CreativeCloud-" and that's what Premiere will actually be saving your preferences to. So you can do one of two things: back up both "Profile" folders or go up a directory and back up the entire "11.0" folder. That's a quick way to preserve everything, trash your prefs, and then test to see if the problem still exists. If it does then you put everything back in place with no harm done. If the problem is resolved then you can start putting your preference files back individually, but be careful about it. When I do this process I usually restore my KB shortcuts file but reset my app preferences because they're not that hard to reconfigure from within Premiere.

Do you have a second screen plugged in that's a different resolution?

If so, if the window isn't completely on your first screen, it may be adapting to the resolution of the second. Even if it looks like its in window 1 a tiny part of your screen might be in window 2. Double click the top of the window or expand the window into the first screen entirely and it should work. Happens a lot to me when using a second monitor!
