My clip labels keep resetting for no reason Premiere Pro 24.1

New Here ,
Dec 10, 2023 Dec 10, 2023

Hi,

I have been getting a really annoying bug where my clips change back to the default setting when working in my projects. It's not always the same cause but its severly slowing down my workflow and I'd like some assistance if possible.

I've tried resetting the media cache, updating drivers, resetting the workspace layout but it keeps happening in all my projects and its infuriating.

The "Show Source Clip Name and Label" is disabled but it keeps doing this anyhow. I've tried switching it on and off but it just stays as my default "Ceruclean" colour once the problem occurs.

Refer to the video below for evidence.

Please help if you can

Hi @Azzension.

I'm curious, do your timeline local color labels come back at any point, say after saving, closing and restarting Premiere Pro?  Or once they're gone, are they gone for good?

And just in the interest of cuation, please test this with a copy of your project.  Since I suggested saving above, I don't want you to irreversibly commit these color changes if they are required for your workflow.

Hi Ben,

No. If I accidentally save my project, I then need to use an autosave from before the label change bug. I had actually done an involuntary test where it had happened, I went to make lunch and came back and it had been over an hour and I was so focused on effects I somehow didn't notice. I had to go back nearly two hours in autosaves and redo the edits from memory. I can change all the label colours back once the bug has occurred but it wastes a lot of time as I'm working with heaps of footage.

Labelling is essential for my workflow as both me and two other people work on editing together and send project files back and forth.

Are you able to share the project file with me that holds the sequence where the colors are breaking?  I can provide you with an email to send to.  I shouldn't need media, just the .prproj.

And what exact version of Premiere are you using?

Hi,

I don't know what that'd accomplish unless you explain it to me. It happens in every project I create. I run the very latest version of Premiere Pro.

Sure - two things specifically to note:

  • We're not able to reproduce this on our side (I'm currently trying in Premiere Pro 24.1.0 build 85).  So if your project has somehow entered an unpredictable state, your project file will give us a starting point where we may be able to reproduce the behavior.
  • We are internally able to examine and diagnose behavior beyond what can be observed from the release version of the software alone.  If your project file allows us to reproduce the issue, we would hopefully be able to determine what Premiere Pro is doing step by step to undersand the result you are seeing.

If you're able to, e-mail me the project file and I'll be happy to keep investigating.

@Azzension

Thanks for the project file!  It helped us identify a bug which we now have logged to fix, and which you are encountering.

It turns out that if you use drag-and-drop as your import method (pulling media from the file system directly into your Premiere Pro project), and your project is in Icon View at the time of import, Premiere Pro will not explicitly assign the imported media a source label color.  As you work with this media in your sequence and change the local label colors, all appears to work as expected.  But if you then switch your project to another view (List, Freeform), Premiere Pro recognizes that some of the label color information is missing from the source clip, and will assign it a default color when the project view is switched.  This will also wipe away any local label color assignments you made to used clips in the sequence, as they will now officially receive their correct source label color information for the first time.

Until this is resolved, you can prevent the issue from happening by:

  • Always importing media to your project in a view other than Icon View.
  • If importing media into your project in Icon View, use an import method other than drag and drop.

There is also a workaround we discovered for your current projects to repair the source clip labels without removing your custom local sequence labels, although I will caution that it is less manageable if you have a lot of sequences in your project, and limited to the length of your undo queue.  I would also suggest backing up your project first, since the steps below require you to temporarily delete the contents of sequences.

  1. Make sure you have no projects open, then open only the project you want to fix.
  2. Open each sequence in your project, select all, and delete the entire contents of each sequence.
  3. Switch your project view from Icon View to List View.
  4. Press undo for each sequence you cleared to restore the sequence contents, until all cleared sequences have been restored.
  5. Save the project.

The above steps allow Premiere Pro to rebuild the missing source label information without pushing this update through to the clips in the sequences.  When the sequences are reconstituted with undo, the sequence clips retain their local color labels, but now reference the repaired source clip label as well.  Once saved, the corrected label information is preserved regardless of which view you use, and you should no longer encounter any local label reset issues.

Hi Ben!

Thankyou very much for the workaround while you fix the issue in the meantime.

Is there any chance you or someone else could look through my other community post? Its a more major issue and its affecting me and my colleague greatly. It would save us heaps of time and money if we could get it resolved.

Hi, Any workaround on this? The label colors keep resetting back to Iris randomly once in while (all clips with color turn to Iris)
'Show source clip name and label' is turned off (Some discussions suggested it be off). In my settings it was already off prior to the bug. I checked keyboard shortcuts in case there was anything, but could not figure out.

Can't believe this one... damn, wasted so much of my time.

Basically it's related to the project/media viewer. If you have too much stuff in there this bug can happen. Quick fix:
1. Select all in the sequence you care about.
2. CTRL+X to cut.
3. Delete all the junk in your project/media section (hope you don't need it!)
4. Paste

Now it won't delete your colors randomly. What a silly bug that's been around for over 2 years.

This just happened to me too!! And I'm on a deadline - just randomly reset all of my color labels in the timeline - huge disruption for my workflow as well. Honestly get to together Premiere.
