Can you use Multicams inside Multicams?

Explanation:

In AVID I would do this using merged clips to build a multicam but the merge clip link to source files limitation in Premiere makes that unavailable.

I need to have the 2nd system audio synched to the camera takes (simple 1xVideo 4xAudio track multicams) and then the takes synched to a music track (one big multicam). Need to be able to chose when to hear the in-studio recording and when to hear the master track that was produced from the recording session after the shoot. Also need to be able to go back to source files for post mix.

So, can you put multicams inside multicams?

I've got 10 songs to do this way so if I'm committing to Premiere to do it I hope this will work. While I am at it, make merged clips match frameable back to source files please.

What limitation do you mean exactly?

If you right click on a multi-cam and open in timeline, you can then edit clips into the multicam. Does this help?

I was referring to the limitation of merged clips. You can't match back to the source files of merged clips. Which causes a problem with taking audio to post mixing.
I was experimenting with this workflow this afternoon and I don't think I have to even make the subsequences into multicams I can/could just leave them as subsequences and build the Multicam with those.

I've got to test the full workflow all the way to flattening a "final edit" and making AAFs and sending a sequence out for colour correction.

The one hitch I've run into is seeing the waveforms of the subsequences in a master sequence. I haven't figured out why some subsequences show a waveform and others don't.

What version are you running? There was an issue with nested waveforms not displaying, but I believe it was fixed in 15.4.

Audio in PP multicam sequences can go very wrong. So many PP veterans recommend only using Mcam for the video - have the original audio in the timeline.

First indication is when the waveforms don't show. Flattening will also show where things have gone wrong, but that's generally too late.

With those caveats I've found Mcam audio to be OK - if set up right. Generally easiest to have a Mcam template sequence that is correct (must be all the same track format - mono easiest) and paste a sync map into that template.

You could build your sync map with field recorder on tracks 1-4 and the music on 5-6 - no need for merged clips, just use A1-4 for field recorder and a5-6 for music. Field recorder workflow *should* work in flattened, exported AAF.

I think I'd use same workflow in Avid, ie no need to nest audio in autosync/merged clips.

I do need to make some kind of merged/grouped clip of the camera and 2nd system audio to find the sync with the master music track. I have to do this by hand/eye as these are music recording sessions where the songs were being built as we shot so there's no consistent track to synch the camera to. Sometimes we got a click track out of the board but that only gets you close once you're in the general viccinity. Before you ask, I requested a TC out from the ProTools into one of the 8 tracks of the audio recorder but that wasn't possible.

I don't need to cut audio in a multicam-style but I do need to be able to match frame back to the source audio tracks so I can lay them in to the main sequence.

@Mike Dziennik I am on 15.4.1 (Build 6) which is the latest. However I gather from reading @Trevor_Asq 's post I will I have to get all my channel formats for all the source sequences set up properly before I can figure that particular problem out.
