I know there has been some posts out there about playback issues with PPro 13.1, and I've tried all the different suggestions.
Trashing Media Cache, peak files, preferences, Disabling hardware acceleration, etc. Renaming the media folder and re-linking. Restart after restart after restart.
Still - a project that I could edit fine with Pre 13.1 Pro won't play for a few seconds before freezing video and audio keeps playing.
The only thing I think I has worked is to go into Project Manager, and copy and transcode the timeline I'm working on to a new project with transcoded media to QT Prores.
I have Resolve and Vegas on the same machine, and they can seem to play the video just fine. But this is a project I started on PPRO for a client - and now I have lost a day and a half, just trying to get PPRO to work.
I know there are probably plenty of people out there that haven't had issues - but as a video professional, I can't really keep trusting Adobe if it means every buggy upgrade means I'm going to miss deadlines, or lose work. Especially when you pay $60 month. Especially when there are other options.
Dell XPS 9570
Win 10
Nvidia Geforce 1050 Ti with MaxQ (ver.430.39)
PPRO 13.1.2
If anyone has any other suggestions I'm all ears.
And FYI – starting a new project without enabling the hardware acceleration and it seems to be working fine so far….
Strange that it should only affect old projects.

Here are two things you can try.
First - Delete Media Cache Folders
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2152942
Next, reset preferences
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2126506
I would expect that to help solve the issue. Please update the thread if problems persist.
best,
Wes

Thanks Wes,
I did both of those things - and it didn't change anything.

Hey John,
There have been many changes related to GPU drivers for 13.1.
If you open the project in a previous version, everything plays fine? Any chance anything changed with your latest project versions?
Does the problem go away if you switch to Software only mode (no GPU acceleration). I'd imagine that playback could be slower in this case due to the lack of GPU acceleration but this will all depend on number of effects used, scaling, etc.
I would be interested to hear how software playback performance compares to GPU acceleration...wondering if the GPU driver could be part of the problem.
Are all of your effects GPU accelerated? Any 3rd party effects? Any changes to audio devices or configuration?

Do you mean if I downgrade from 13 and open an old project?
It was playing fine before the upgrade to 13 came along. I don't really have time to downgrade and find an old project and lose work.
I don't have any 3rd party effects, mostly just Lumetri color correction on this 1 minute project.
Some clips don't even play now - just black screen when I try to play them.
Software only doesn't seem to help at all.
Sorry - I don't have time to keep chasing this down - I have to render and finish in Resolve. I just can't edit.
The GPU driver is the most recent Nvidia driver.....so....
I guess if anyone else reads this *don't upgrade to 13*
At least don't if you have any current projects.

Hi John,
I do understand your frustration and I'm happy to lend a hand here. I don't believe this is a common problem facing most users.
Feel free to ping me when you have time. Something doesn't sound right here..
I work on the engineering team and I'm an editor - this can all be sorted out with a little time (when you have some)
Also lmk if you would like send me an offline Project file? (no media, etc).

I'm sorry Wes, this is a more common problem than you think that should be urgently addressed. I've found multiple support threads from multiple users (and multiple posters inside the threads) over the past 13.1 and 13.1.2 updates that are experiencing this problem. I have a massive project (feature length documentary) that has survived through multiple updates for a couple years and now I can't move forward with it in a crucial time and now have multiple people (translators, producers, etc...) idling.
I just tried reverting from 13.1.2 to 13.1 and now going to go down to the 12's to hopefully rectify this. Reverting from 13.1.2 to 13.1 I thought worked for playback, but after a few minutes with the project open I'm experiencing the same issue. The audio plays and the video does not or is extremely laggy to the point of Premiere being useless.
I have also cleared all media cache files and peak files and preferences as well as trying to switch the playback to software only. About to do a total uninstall of premiere and re-install with hopes this works ![]()
Please fix!!! We are being swindled of our money, time and lives with these bug -riddled releases.

Hi Jordan,
I'm not trying to dismiss or minimize the issue. Sorry to hear you're having some challenges. I totally understand your frustration and would like to lend a hand.
In many cases, these problems can be the result of various issues. ie. a GPU driver, an issue with a format or a configuration issue, etc. in the end there are many variables and I often need more info in order to be able to get to the bottom of the issue.
I have been working with users on this thread. That is in progress but more direct communication would be helpful. Exchanging texts or emails every day or two isn't the fastest way to get to the bottom of issues like this but I am available to help. Feel free to send me a PM if you'd like to share info more directly / quickly, etc.
Ideally, I'd love to collect a small sample project that reproduces this problem clearly along with some system config details, etc.
If I can reproduce the issue on my side I can quickly advise on workarounds or fixes and escalate internal fixes as needed.

One other thought - Have you isolated this to only occur with older projects?
One other thing worth trying (with the info I have on hand) would be importing into a clean new project. I've seen this help some users in the past.

Hey Wes,
I appreciate the help, and interest. I did go through project manager and create a new project; but I also transcoded all the media and it seemed to play fine. But other original footage I imported back in to the project still refused to play. I also had proxies of that footage and turned on proxies thinking that was the issue, but still no love.
Do you mean ping you here? Sorry I don't spend too much time on the boards here.
Happy to send you the project file, and even a bit of footage for you to test out. Just tell me how.

why the PMs cant we all read the issue and this fix ? im facing something smiler as in i imporeted some random 360~1080p to my project and they were working just fine yesterday now im back in work and they dont want to play back anymore .... i9 with 64gb + rtx2070 should play back 360p mp4 videos ....

The PM request was to help facilitate acquisition of the project file and also facilitate direct communication.
As this issue does not affect most users, I need to gather as much info as possible so I can determine what could be causing this. As is often the case, I would expect that the issues reported here could vary by user, config, format, GPU, etc.
In the case of 360p video performance, this sounds like a separate issue possibly related to a specific format as the machine being used is very capable. What kind of clips are these? Could you possibly provide a project with sample media? Also, what changed between yesterday and today? Were there any updates, configuration changes or modifications to the project, filters, etc? Please feel free to send me a PM if you are able to share a project or media.

all MP4 formats and i think the only thing that changed might be a windows update mind you Pp was still open when i got back so it didn't even restart. tried it today (was still open since ) and it ran 2~3s fine and then it did it again the video stopped and the audio kept going. forgot to tell you that both my c and d are Samsung 970 pro NVME drives . also updated everything windows and gpu also audio whatever i could find i updated it also did an optimization run on the SSD's just in case did a benchmarks both were doing 3.5GB/s i just cant pinpoint the issue .. the clips run fine on VLC outside but not in Pp .

The new version is so damned slow! I know you guys want to know what our systems are but the truth is, they are the same that was working perfectly well in the previous version of Premiere. I was very happy! So I upgraded and basically nothing is happening. I finally just stupidly save the project and then went back to the previous version -- AND NOW I CAN'T OPEN THE PROJECT!!! What the hell is this? YOu guys are killing me.

Ron. I understand and share some frustration. One thing that worked for me at least in the short term is to go into the timeline you need to work on, go into project manager and tell it to collect files and transcode them into QT 422. Then I could edit. Somewhat drastic, but if you need to finish a project might be worth it.
Other things that have been known to help people is manually trash all media cache and preferences and reopen the project.
Changing the name of the media folder and forcing relink of your footage.
Disabling hardware acceleration (Think this is in preferences)
Change project settings to only use software not Cuda or OpenCL.
I THINK. don't have my machine in front of me... But if you search the forum for playback issues you should find this
Just didn't work for me.
Best of luck.

Simply the worst experience I've ever had with Premiere Pro...I seriously cannot work on a project that is due Monday.
Dell XPS 15 (This is literally a brand new computer, opened the box from Dell two days ago, just installed Adobe CC)
i9 6 Core
GTX 1050 Ti Max-Q
32GB RAM
Have opened two projects, one with hardware acceleration (OpenCL), the other without. Premiere struggles to import simple MP4 files, lags rendering the preview thumbnails, won't playback in the project bin, won't playback in a brand new timeline. Audio plays...don't care. The video freezes on the first frame and stays there as the playhead continues to play through, no change in the image.
I've restarted like ten times, updated my drivers to the latest, I'm about to try the "collect and transcode" scenario mentioned earlier, but this is really ridiculous. I've never had to jump through so many hoops to edit a very simple project in Premiere.
What is going on?
