Premier freezes when second monitor is enabled

I recently bought a new computer and now when I try to enable my second monitor (Edit>Preferences>Playback) Premier freezes.  I can move the play header around but there is no video display on either the main screen or second display.

Computer Specs

Processor: Intel i7-8750 @ 2.20Ghz

RAM:         16GB.  (3 GB reserved for other application while Premier is open)

GPU:          NVIDIA GTX 1060

When using my old computer with the same monitor using the normal VGA connector with the monitor it worked fine.  Now I am using HDMI.

I have tried enable the second monitor, close premier, and restart the computer.  When opening a project it still freezes with no video display.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Trying to think of something here.

Are either of your screens set to other than straight 100% for scaling?

Is the second screen set to 'extend to this screen' in the OS setting?

My recommendation is to use computer monitors for GUI display only.  Connect a TV/Broadcast Monitor to a dedicated I/O device (AJA Kona, Blackmagic Intensity) for external monitoring.

Hi Tralpat,

Sorry for your issue. I understand that you are unable to preview on your secondary monitor. Is that correct?

  • Are you on Windows or Mac?
  • Do you get a preview if you disconnect the secondary monitor?

Please try changing the Video Renderer to software only.

FAQ: How to change the Video Renderer in Premiere Pro?

Let us know if this helps.

Thanks,

Shivangi

I am on Windows 10.  I changed the video renderer to software only and verified that my display is extended to the second monitor.  I am still having the same issue.  When I get a chance, is it worth it to try a different monitor?

Not sure if it helps but the audio will play but not the video.  And the playhead doesn't move.

Thank you for providing the information.

Go to Edit > Preferences and post a screenshot of your Audio Hardware settings.

Additionally, try changing your Default Input to No Input and let us know if that helps.

When I get a chance, is it worth it to try a different monitor?

Yes, it is.

Thanks,

Shivangi

Using a different monitor (TV in this case) also did not work.

Hello Tralpat,

Can you try the following suggestions?

1. Switch your workspace to Editing or any other default workspace. (Choose Window > Workspaces > Editing).

2. Move your Premiere Pro workspace to the secondary monitor and check if you get the preview on the primary monitor.

Hope this helps.
