brand new from about a year ago... Not in front of the machine now... but after trying all sorts of stuff just created a new user with administrator privileges and all was well.    Happy to go in to greater detail with all the things I tried, but wanted to just put it out there, that this is a very basic troubleshooting step...  and sometimes it works.

What Mac OS?

If Sequoia, roll back until things settle down.  Many NLEs are having Sequoia issues.

not on Sequoia...  Probably on Ventura...  Figured I'd fill in the blanks.  I did the usual steps, reset preferences, deleted caches...  Thought maybe the external lacie drive was dying...  as Premiere seemed to be endlessly accessing the drive...    Ran diskfirstaid on the drive... Thought maybe there was a permissions issue on the external drive, but didn't seem to be a problem, and hadn't been a month ago...  The material was all shot on an iphone 14 pro.  4K..  Transcoded everything to prores422 cfr...    Generated proresproxy proxies.  This project goes back over a year...  Hadn't been worked on for about a month...    Sitting there with the client as the laptop repeatedly locked up...      There were 2 admin accounts on the laptop, my clients and mine.  logged out of hers and logged in to mine, and worked for a couple of hours without issues...  Started to set up a new account and then just gave up and gave her my account password...    It's all about being able to keep working...
