Premiere Pro 2020 freezes when importing large mp4 file

Hey I was wondering if there's a workaround without using a 3rd party program to import large mp4 files. Everytime I do so it freezes and starts filling up my ram way more than it should and doesn't stop. I then give up and use CS6 since it still works perfectly and I didn't keep version 12 installed which was the last version that worked. I'm on the latest update on Premiere and Windows 10. Hopefully this is fixed soon and thanks for any help.

PC specs:

Ryzen 7 2700x

16gb ram

GTX 1070

480gb ssd

4tb hdd

2tb hdd

are these files from a screen recording app?  If so, that's probably the source of the problem.

It's from OBS using its game hook. It records straight from the gpu using NVENC H.264 encoding, not screen grabbing. On top of that I can record a 10 sec clip with it and no problems. I doubt it's OBS since the files work import with no problems on Premiere v12 and back. It records at 50Mbps CBR as well.

You're running into a known bug with Premiere Pro that was introduced early last year in one of the 2019 updates.  Adobe knows about this issue as of Fall, 2019, and are still working to remedy it.  No ETA has been given on said fix.  Your work-arounds are to transcode to a different format (which you shouldn't have to do), or just sit and wait for Premiere to finish the import.  The import will finish.  It just sends one of your cores up to 100% while it decodes the h.264 file; the slower your processor, the longer this process will take.  The longer the file, the longer it'll take as well.  But it will ultimately complete and you can begin editing it.

Some of the documentation put forth suggests that this is due to "Variable Frame Rate".  That's simply not the case in the least.  This happens with VFR and CFR files of a certain type.

Thanks! Well crap I hoping somebody had found a trick to get around it by now. Ya I'm just tired on having to wait for the dumb thing to import. Hopefully it's fixed soon, in the meantime I'll just keep using my trusty old CS6.
