Premiere Pro CC lags when switching between tools

I'm recently finding that when I switch between sequence tools, i.e. between the selection tool and the slip tool, i get the spinning beach ball.

The lag lasts for 10 to 15 seconds.

This is consistent between projects, large or small.

I am running the most recent version of PP, 11.1.2 (22 build).

Any thoughts would be helpful.

Hi Rob,

I cleaned out the unused media cache and that seems to have fixed it.

Thanks for the help!

I would try these 2 steps.

1. Go to Premiere Pro or Edit/Preferences/media cache and clean unused.

If that doesn't help try this.

Re-start the app.

2.

To open the Preferences dialog box, choose Edit > Preferences (Windows) or Premiere Pro > Preferences (Mac OS), and select the category of preferences you want to change. To restore default preference settings, hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) while the application is starting

Re-start the app.

Good luck

I've been having this glitch since they added the Type tool, it's a really annoying one!  Slows down my editing so much.  I tried cleaning the media cache and it's still happening.  Any other suggestions?  Adobe better fix this ASAP!

Do you have any idea how much time I'm wasting trying to switch between simple tools such as cut and rolling edit? It's infuriating. Ive been experiencing this bug since the beginning of 2017.

Is the opinion that there are no other options? I am tired of this. I have emptied unused media cache, the only solution is to restart the program every few minutes. Fix this. Now. It's still an issue with 2018 and you've had complaints about it for over a year.

I just purchased resolve studio. I don't want to learn new software, Ive been using Adobe for ages. But this is getting ridiculous.

I have absolutely the same problem on Mac Sierra and Mac HighSierra

But on Yosemite everything is fine!

And I want to add that this problem appears not in the beginnig of work right after startup of Premiere,  but after some time...

Hello everyone!

I want to add that its very hard to discover this problem I guess because its not constant so many people doesnt notice it I think. And it doesnt depend on premiere settings/video and audio formats/sequences/projects/mercury playback/caches or anything else  - trust me I tried everything because its super annoying.  Its hardware and software issues.

Anyway I have made crazy experiment which doesnt solve anything but maybe it  will help someone to understand the reason.

If you make a sequence (any settings) with many (MANY) video clips or even ONLY AUDIO (so dont think about video formats) any length. And then press (and hold) "delete" button and just scroll the sequence (with option "Selection follows playhead)" in chaotic mode for a minute or two, and only then try to switch tools then you dicover a small delay/freeze (but trust me - sometimes its much bigger).

I tried this experiment on four different iMacs (different nvidia Cards and different cpus) with Sierra and HighSierra, with fresh installs of Adobe  2017 or 2018 and Os. With a lot of different video/audio - always same result and its very annoying.

But. On Yosemite (Adobe 2017) everything is super fine. No delays at all. No freezes. Super fine and I am really happy. But I am scared that new Premiere 2018 is required at least Capitan which I am sure (my intuition tells me) will have the same delays and freezes that Sierra and HighSierra has.

Please, someone figure it out. I dont want to switch  to Final Cut.

Delete these files:

For Mac OS: <drive>/Users/<username>Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Media cache

Restart PP and tool switching will be instant again.

Repeat this process as often as you need.

Same problem here. Cleaning cache and resetting prefs doesn't work. Oddly enough when I close and restart the app, there is no delay when switching between tools...but after  +/-10 minutes of editing it all the sudden starts throwing the beach balls up for significant lengths of time when switching between tools. For me anyway, it's gets even more confusing....so once I get to the point where I'm getting the Beachball when I select, for example, my razor blade tool, once the Beachball goes away I can then freely switch back and forth between my arrow tool and razor blade without any delay. But if another +/-10 minutes goes by without using the razor blade tool I then have to wait for the Beachball once I select it again.  This same thing happens with all the tools in my palate. It's crazy frustrating especially for someone like me who relies on PP to make a living and support my family. I really hope someone can't figure this out for us. I should also note that I did not experience any of these problems prior to Premier Pro CC 2017.
