Hi all -- 

I'm preparing to take the official Premier Pro certification test. I bought the practice test, and it keeps marking one of my test answers as incorrect. I wrote to GMetrix asking about it last month, and they still haven't answered my question. Here's what I wrote to them:

"One of the questions on a practice test (#6?) says to decrease the opacity of a clip from 100% at 5 seconds to 0% at 6 seconds. The clip is only 5:23 seconds long on the timeline."

This was  in the section of the test in which you peform the requested activity rather than the multiple choice part of the test.

How do you reduce the opacity of a clip to zero at six seconds when the clip is only 5:23 seconds long?

If the framerate is 23.976 fps it will fit. 5.23 is the same as 6 seconds.

Keyframe on first (0) and last frame (05.23).

Does it not tell you the framerate?

And Ann's post highlights the kind of thinking you have to do to do well on these tests. I haven't seen that particular question, so I am also curious ... did they give the framerate for the question?

No, the clip is 5 minutes and 23 frames, not 5.23 seconds.

I screen recorded my last attempt at answering this question. I set the opacity to 0% at 5:23 as Ann suggested. It was still marked incorrect.

Put the 0% keyframe at 6:00.

They most likely want you to set it at exactly at 6.00 instead of 5.23 in the timeline. But technical speaking, it's incorrect.

Hello scotwllm,

At these durations, it doesn’t really matter if the framerate is 23.976fps or 24fps, but it would make a difference if the clip and/or timeline were 29.97fps (or other) framerates. Check both the timeline and the clip.

That said, unless you’re working with 23fps media and timeline (extremely unlikely), 5 seconds and 23 frames is definitely not the same thing as 6 seconds. The difference is one frame (for 23.976fps and 24fps). Your instructions clearly state to make a setting at 6 seconds, not 5s23f. (for clarity: the instructions say "at 6 seconds" which I'm interpretting to mean 06:00 in the timeline, regardless of durations).

I’ll assume that this is a 23.976fps or 24fps timeline with a clip that matches. I'll also assume for whatever reason that you cannot lengthen the clip in the timeline to 6 seconds (which, in itself, may be the answer). This may help:

You can set key frames outside the length of the clip if you have the “pin to clip” option deselected in the effects control panel. See here.

“You can view the timeline beyond the clip In point and Out point by deselecting Pin To Clip in the Effect Controls panel menu.”

With that option deselected, you will be able to set an opacity keyframe at 6 seconds in the timeline (outside the duration of your clip) as directed.

Ding Ding Ding. We've got a winner.

I deselected Pin to Clip, went back to the clip on the timeline, set the watchamacallit to 500, and added a keyframe in the effects control panel. I then set the watchmacallit to 600. The clip deselected. I clicked on it and reselected it. Then I created another keyframe and set the opacity value to zero. 

I clicked the Next button, and the answer was marked correct.

I wouldn't in a million years have figured that out without all your help. I emailed GMetrix about it 16 days ago. I received an email acknowledgement that they received my inquiry, which included an assurance that I'd receive a response within a day. Two weeks later, I received an email from them saying that they're closing the inquiry and marking it completed. Their reasoning was that it wasn't done, so it was done.
