Premiere Pro Crashing While Editing Canon CLOG3 Footage

Hello everyone,

I am having an issue where everytime I open a project in Premiere Pro with footage from my Canon R5C, after about a minute or so it crashes.

Originally, I was able to edit it for a little bit as long as I deleted my Media Cache everytime I opened the project. It doesn't seem to be alleviating the crashing now and I am no longer to edit my footage at all. I cannot seem to figure out what the problem is.

If I edit gaming footage, I have no issues at all. I am working on a Laptop with a AMD Ryzen 7 5800H with Radeon Graphics processor and a Geforce RTX 3060 Graphics Card.

My apps are all up to date and my Nvidia Studio Graphics Drivers are up-to-date as well. All other Adobe Apps I use (Lightroom and Photoshop) run fairly well.

I am still kind of a Novice at Premiere Pro so bear with me.

Hello,

Let’s troubleshoot the issue with your Canon R5C footage in Premiere Pro:

  1. Check Footage Compatibility:
    • Codec and Format: Ensure that the footage from your Canon R5C is in a compatible format and codec for Premiere Pro. The R5C typically records in Canon's own XF-AVC or MP4 formats, and if these use specific settings or codecs, they might sometimes cause issues.
    • Transcode Footage: Try transcoding your footage to a more editing-friendly format like ProRes or DNxHD. This can alleviate issues with playback and stability.
  2. Clear Media Cache:
    • Clear Cache Files: Go to Preferences > Media Cache and clear all cache files. This is crucial since corrupted cache files can lead to crashes.
    • Delete Cache Manually: Sometimes, deleting cache files manually can help. Look for the media cache files in your project folder or in the location specified in Premiere Pro’s settings and delete them.
  3. Update Software and Drivers:
    • Premiere Pro: Ensure you are using the latest version of Premiere Pro. Adobe regularly releases updates that fix bugs and improve performance.
    • Graphics Drivers: While you mentioned your drivers are up-to-date, it’s worth double-checking for the latest drivers, especially for the RTX 3060, as new updates can resolve compatibility issues.
  4. Check Project Settings:
    • Sequence Settings: Ensure that your sequence settings match the specifications of your footage. Mismatched settings can sometimes cause instability.
    • Project Settings: Check if there are any custom settings or effects applied in the project that might be causing the crash.
  5. Examine Hardware Usage:
    • Resource Utilization: Monitor your CPU, GPU, and RAM usage when Premiere Pro is running. Overloading system resources can cause crashes. Tools like Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (macOS) can help.
    • Thermal Throttling: Ensure your laptop isn’t overheating. Overheating can cause hardware to throttle down, leading to instability.
  6. Disable Hardware Acceleration:
    • Graphics Acceleration: Go to File > Project Settings > General and try changing the Renderer to Software Only, bypassing GPU acceleration. Sometimes, hardware acceleration can cause conflicts.
  7. Test with Different Footage:
    • Verify File Integrity: Test with a different set of footage (e.g., other Canon R5C footage or footage from another camera) to see if the issue is specific to certain files.
  8. Check for Conflicting Plugins:
    • Disable Plugins: If you have third-party plugins installed, try disabling them to see if they are causing the crash.
  9. Create a New Project:
    • Start Fresh: Create a new project and import a small amount of Canon R5C footage. Check if the new project crashes as well. This can help determine if the issue is with the project file or with the footage/software setup.
  10. Log and Report Crashes:
    • Adobe Support: If the issue persists, use Adobe’s crash reporting tool to log the crash details. You can contact Adobe Support with these logs for more targeted assistance.

Additional Tips:

  • Backup Your Work: Regularly back up your project files to avoid losing work due to crashes.
  • System Maintenance: Perform regular maintenance on your laptop, such as checking for malware and ensuring your operating system is updated.

Thank you for your reply. After going through your list, it seems that the only thing that seems to work is that any of my footage that was recorded in XF-AVC format crashes after a minute or so. Anything recorded in MP4(HEVC) runs beautifully and has yet to crash. I will keep testing and pushing the limits but I guess it seems to be a bug with XF-AVC.

Is this on several projects, or only in one?

Several, I have tried making new projects many times and it seems that if it is in XF-AVC format it crashes. So far still hasn't with MP4(HEVC).

I assume that you use Premiere Pro 24.x and that version has serious issues with MXF-files and is more or less unusable.

Try the beta version, iow version 25.0. They released a fix yesterday that seems to have solved most of the issues. You will find the beta version in your Creative Cloud app.
