Premiere Pro linking media with the same name incorrectly

My project has been completely messed up because Premiere Pro is seemingly unable to differentiate files of the same name. I've returned to an old project having moved the footage folder to a separate hard drive, but not changing the directory inside the footage folder at all: it consists of several folders with video files of the same naming format counting up to around 200 (e.g. x01, x02, etc). What I've found upon Premiere automatically relinking is that the program has confused almost all of these files, to the extent that the 'last path' for many of them is incorrect and ponts to the wrong folder, and there seems to be no way of recovering the original correct paths.

With hindsight I should have renamed every file or added a number distinction to them as I have done with every case of working with footage like this since. At the time I assumed there were other ways Premiere could tell video files apart.

I'm desperate to find a solution besides spending a day relinking every file manually, using trial and error to figure out the correct clip. Any help would be appreciated.

The question is, A- did you save the project after the faulty relinking? And B- Do you have an unlinked copy?
