ProRes Insert Without Full Re-Render

Hey All,

I've heard that the above is a feature in Premiere. Can I take say a large Prores 4444 file, drop in some insert also in the same 4444 codec, render in the sequence timeline, and export out in the same 4444 codec, so that the rest of the video is the same? Will rendering with "Use Previews" achieve this? The goal is basically to allow small inserts without needing to re-QC the entire file.

You're most of the way there. According to Smart rendering in Premiere Pro, all you need to do is drop a ProRes 4444 clip into a timeline and if you simply select ProRes 4444 in your Export Settings, you'll be good to go. You dont even need to select Use Previews. In fact, don't, UNLESS you've also changed your Preview File Format to match ProRes 4444 as well. Then, you can even add an effect to a clip (if needed) and if you render it in the timeline, it can use the rendered clip in the export to speed up the export process.

What you DONT want to do, is drop a ProRes 4444 clip into a timeline, render it for any reason without changing your sequence settings, and then choose Use Previews in the export settings dialog box because that workflow would convert your ProRes 4444 files to an MPEG based codec then BACK to PR 4444 at the end. Not good! lol.

PP does not insert into files like CineX (https://cinextools.com/ ) does or Avid does (for a limited range of file types / frame rates currently.

Smart renders will get you part of the way but you should really QC the entire file again.

Ok this is new insight. I've just called Adobe support to confirm this; they are apparently getting someone to call me back.

HOWEVER --- I'd like to move on this as soon as possible since our studio now has a purchase decision to make. We want to get a confirmation on this from the horse's mouth, Adobe itself. jasontcox perhaps you could also confirm this? Or anyone who works/develops directly for Premiere?

So imagine that we only use Premiere as a transcoder, and we don't need to think in terms of being an editor and using Smart Rendering to save time. I just need to know if Premiere allows just an instant drop-in to the literal same file -- as to avoid needing a full QC rewatch of an entire feature film -- in any of the processes similar to Smart Render. But the keyword there is render, so I've perhaps answered the question on my own.

Trevor_Asq mentions CinexTools, which we are already researching and are in contact with them about. Can we confirm the feature that they offer here has no true equivalent in Premiere/Encoder?

Yeah, unfortunately, there is no true "drop in" feature into existing I-frame formatted files like ProRes inside of Premiere Pro. As Trevor suggested, you'd want to check out something like CineX Tools. Sorry!
