Proxy Workflow: export using proxies?

Explorer ,
Jul 08, 2016 Jul 08, 2016

I see that when using the Proxy workflow, it still uses the full-resolution media on exports. That's great for the final cut, but when exporting rough cuts it really makes the exports take a whole lot longer - 3x longer on my tests. Would be great if that was an option left up to the user whether to export using proxies of full res media - instead of doing some workaround where I change the location of the original media to force it to export with proxies.

Test export - 3 minute 4k sequence with scaled 5k R3Ds (proxies are 1080p ProRes Proxy)

Proxy export (1080p mp4) - 5:55

Original media export (1080p mp4) - 15:05

Yes, export will currently always use Full Res if Full Res and Proxy clips are Online. The other possible workaround is to select all clips in the Project panel or Sequence, right-click and select Make Offline. This will also make all Full Res clips Offline, which will force export of Proxy.

far from ideal solution if you have a lot of media in various places....

Thank you Peter, so how is it related to "project manager"?. BTW, I checked this now - offline a bin folder. it looks to me that I only have to link one of the video files and as long as the file structure was the same, all files come back intact even if they are in different folders or drives.

saving a version of the project file is a good idea.

Hi, has this feature been added yet? seems ridiculous that we have too make full res rushes offline to workaround this?

Nope, it seems like a no-brainer, but that little checkbox of joy has yet to appear... one day maybe, or maybe not. 😕

Hi Peter

The toggle proxy button is used to toggle proxy use on/off in the timeline... but regardless of that setting, Premiere will always use the full res on export if it's available.

Cheers

Where the rest of the Program monitor buttons are "stored" until you move them onto the Program Monitor's controls ... in the options panel you get to on clicking the + sign at the far right of the Program monitor's controls.

The Proxy icon is a little thing that's like two small rectangles with arrows around them ... drag it into place in your control block.

Where do I sign? It’s taking 1.5 hours to export a 15 minute short film. Original media is 4k. Ingested with 1080 ProRes422 Proxies. This should take ten minutes or less to output.

What is your media, what effects applied, what's your system? All those affect exports. You may be right that it could be a short export, but I've also seen posts here where they had Warp, video-noise reduction, and multiple Lumetri and thought they should still get an export shorter than the 'length' of the timeline.

And what's the deliverable you're creating?

+1 for the choice of export using proxies

+1 to simplifying the preset choice/creation

However I did manage to get my preset built in AME & copied to right location & proxy implementation is very good indeed. I use it for AVCIntra multicam sources & have my timeline set to render to my delivery codec (ProRes) so I get to edit with AVCI whilst proxies are created in background, then get a smoother edit once proxies are created, as edit gets closer to fine cut I render the sequence and see full res again. Very nice.

I just ran into this issue this morning and discovered this thread. Any luck adding this feature? Giving the option to export using proxy media should be a no brainer...  the whole point of using proxies is to work faster.  I'm exporting a two and a half hour interview string for the director to watch and it originally told me it would take 6 hours. They shot 6K RED footage ( don't ask) and I'm working with 1080p Pro Res Proxies. The option to use the Proxy media would be very nice.

There is a workaround.

Select the original media, right-click and make offline.

The Premiere can use the proxy media for export.

Then make the media online again.
