"Error compiling movie. Unknown Error." OR program crash when rendering

When rendering in Premiere Pro CC I get the messge "Error compiling movie. Unknown Error." OR the program crashes.

-Adobe Premiere Pro CC V 7.0.0 (342)

-ASUS Z87-A, Intel Core i7 4 core, 16gb RAM

-450gb+ disc space

-Also installed: After Effects, Adobe Media Encoder

-All recent updates installed

-Windows7 64bit

-I am using all programs through Creative Cloud

-Footage is AVCHD 720p but doesn't work with .mts or .mp4 files

-I am trying to render speed and simple cross dissolves. Neither are working

-This has happened before on a friend's desktop. I was using his machine to edit on while I was in the process of building mine. He got the same error when I was trying to export. I restarted and the issue was fine. Restarting on my machine has not solved the issue. This leads me to think it is a bug in the program?

-I have been running After Effects and it has worked flawlessly.

Help!?

Hi,

This is an old post describing a generic problem. Create a new post with your system details, info about your media, and screenshots of any error dialog boxes you get. Crash reports also help. Feel free to attach those. Sorry for this issue, but with info, it can be solved.

Help documentation may assist this issue: https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/kb/error-compiling-movie-rendering-or.html

This (moving video to different layers) works for me sometimes.  However I now have a basic edit that has 7 video layers because it won't work on V1, so I move to V2, then the next clip only works on V3 for example, then the next clip on V1, then the next clip on V4 and so on.. up to layer 7 for what should be a very simple edit and export.

2. It still didn't work in some cases, until.. we went to 'Sequence' and change the Edit Mode to be 'Custom' and then at the bottom, change the Preview File Format to Microsoft AVI (the default sequence has choseen IFrame only MPEG).It doesn't seem to matter what coded you then selected  - they call worked.  WIth this, all my sequences then rendered!

OK...  Have tried this but it's not working.  It's on my final export.  I can preview the footage OK but when I hit export it crashes - error compiling movie.  Anymore ideas?  3.24am and have been trying to export since about 10pm.  My deadline is 9am.

Seriously Adobe..  I am switching back to Avid if this isn't sorted like yesterday!  How can you guys just ignore a thread like this that's been going on for months.  With all due respect I am a professional editor.  I have switched everything to Adobe. Sometimes it works fine then boom.. it just doesn't work and I can't find a work around.

It's a completely unfinished product that's not even in beta.  You are selling and making money out of a faulty product.  You have to fix this!!!

What do I say to my clients "Oh sorry, it's Adobe's fault?"  - You'll lose me my clients!!!  It's MIPTV at Cannes next week, tens of thousands of pounds have been invested into this event for my client.  I sold the Premiere workflow to my clients after 15 years on Avid.  If I let them down with no promo content the financial loss is unthinkable.

Can someone from Adobe please contact me!  You have my details!!!

As people have said above - clips seem to get corrupted.  They play fine in the preview monitor.  Premiere hangs up on them.  It's completely unprdictable.  This has happened to me on DSLR footage.  .MTS footage.  ProRes footage.  24p.  25p.  Moving the clips to different video tracks sometimes fixes it but then it can go offline again.  Then when one clip is fixed it happens to another.. and another.

This is just an idea and I hope it helps but I've never tried it.  First, I've had some success when I delete the renders of the sequence so that may help.  Maybe save the project as a new version, in a new place (in theory that would keep the renders on the original version correct?) - then try duplicating the seq and killing the renders - and if that doesn't work, I wonder if you killed the renders - used the dynamic link to send your video to after effects, then just saved the AE project, it may work as a mixdown for your video? Again, just guessing trying to help.  Hope it works.

Thanks for your advice...  I've tried most of that.

Another way of fixing it is to recmpress the original file into a different format (which is hit or miss as other files seem to get corrupt) but that has worked on this edit.  I have three edits to export.  Finally got one out.  Dreading trying the other two.

Thanks again though.

I think Adobe need to stand up and be counted now.  Avid tech support would have had this solved months ago.  Adobe have just gone quiet.  I think it's a consumer product (Adobe) VS proproduct (Avid).  If Adobe want to be taken seriously they need to act seriously.  It's a shame as I don't like to hate on a product at all and have been a big believer in CC but this is simply not on.

Hello,

This error is a shame for Adobe.

I never had this with Avid Studio which is not software for Pro (PP CC

is for Pro).

Two ways to continue render :

- 1) do not use Cuda but soft only : and you will never have this error

but the render might be 10 or 20 more time longer,

- 2) when this error appear :

- save the project,

- close Pp CC (or CS6),

- reopen PP CC (or CS6),

- reload the project,

- resume the render.

It works well for me but this is not a true solution.

I have noticed that this error occurs only with pictures never with videos.

This problem is well known by Adobe :

http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/kb/error-compiling-movie-rendering-or.html

but not the "unknown error".

You can also complete a" bug report" or a "wish form"

Another way : quit definitely Adobe and use FCPX (I have scheduled this

migration, right now I am trying FCPX), but I do not know if FCPX has or

not the same problem.

Please note that nobody in Adobe read the forum : they read only the

"wish forms" and "bug reports"

I'm encountering this bug on my latest project.  Troubleshooting it is infuriating because it seems there are more than one variable that causes this.  I can't consistently find a solution.  Usually, the most successful solution is to close Premiere and reopen the project, then render.  Sometimes this works.  But lately, with a longer render segment, it always fails with the 'Error compiling...Unknown error."

This is so frustrating!

Things that I've tried:

Replacing pngs with jpgs.... worked the first time, then fails in a different place.

Turning off GPU... no difference.

Flattening all multi-cam sequences.... no difference.

Rendering to a different codec.... worked once or twice... lately fails everytime.

Changing something that makes it work once, but then fails later makes me feel like I'm going crazy.

I've spent many hours trying to solve this problem.  Judging by the number of people encountering this render bug, Adobe needs to focus more resources to solve this critical bug soon.  When you have people failing to meet Cannes film festival submissions due to this problem (someone in this thread), people should be paying attention.

The biggest question: Why does Adobe have such a generic error message for this problem?  More information would help people track down the probable numerous causes for this error.  Without more information about the error, it is IMPOSSIBLE to track down the causes because there are so many moving variables in everyone's projects and hardware setups.

Hi,

I suggest that every PP user fill up a "bug report". Link below :

https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

I asked the Adobe support about this bug. The only answer was : "Fill up a bug report, this is not within our job to do that".

I suggest something else, but this might be too much expensive for some of us : discard PP CC and work with FCPX which might have other problems.

This bug is really weird.  After trying to zero in on the problem area in my project, it became apparent that there is no trouble spot/media/effect.

There seems to be some kind of cumulative render bug that is corrected when restarting Premiere.  So if you try to render too much content, it will fail.  If I break up the project into smaller chunks and continually restart Premiere, I might be able to render my project in pieces.  This is incredibly frustrating and tedious!

So I've managed to render about 10 minutes of my 27 minute project by selecting sections and rendering to MP4, restarting Premiere, and rendering the next section.  But now I've encountered this one section (with a large jpg) that won't render after a restart.  So I rendered it to Cineform AVI.  No problem.  Then I tried the next section to an AVI.... nope.  So now I've switched back to MP4.... and voila, working again.

Am I losing my mind?  There is no pattern to this.  I've spent about 4 hours just trying to render a 27 minute project.

Hi,

Have you tried to render without MPE ?

This option is time consuming but I never encountered the crash render.

Do not forget that a large lot of effects are not rendered by MPE and

use only the CPU.

And why does Premiere randomly sometimes rerender all the audio previews?  This ordeal is bad enough, and now I have to wait for something to rerender over and over and over again.

Well, turning off MPE enabled me to render the last segment.  I'm going to shoot for the moon and try to render the entire rest of the project without MPE.

Hi,

If you are in HD (1920x1080), please note that the AVI files must not be

larger than 2GB.

Another thing : clean up your database ( cache and media cache files) PP

CS and PP CC need a clean database.

Yeah!!! Turning off MPE enabled me to render the rest of my project.  Still think I'm losing my mind though because an earlier attempt to render with MPE disabled did not prevent the render error.

Hi Vanlazarus 2013,

Check it, but sometime ago I encoutered this restriction on an AVI

sequence made with Mercalli Heroglyph 4.0 : the AVI file was created but

Windows Media and Adobe PP CC were unable to read it until I reduced the

size under 2 GB.

I encountered this bug recently too - what had happened was that the project unexpectedly quit previously, so my fix (after trying everything else mentioned here) was to create a new project, import all the bins from the old project and export that.

I think something had corrupted the project when PP quit, which creating a new project seems to have fixed.

Hopefully this will help some people if they come across this unknown error!

No probs, I completely sympathise with everyone who is posting here, such a shame.. a great edit package when it works.  If I had clients breathing down my neck I simply would have no excuse for them and no way of fixing it witthout trial and error that can take days.  There are too many variables.  Murcury Playback.  Preview Files.  Unlinked footage.  LUT's.  It's ridiculous.

I have not tried these but;

You could also select the whole project and copy it.  Make a new sequence and paste it into that and try rendering.

Better still..select the whole project, copy, open after effects, paste into AE.  Re-open Premiere, make an entirely new project > new sequence and paste that back into a new sequence (is that possible?).  if so it might work.

I have not tried these ideas and not sure if it's possible to paste from AE back into Premiere but it might work.

Thinking out aloud.

Good luck everyone.  If you find a definitive solution please post here.

Thanks

I think it's only fair I came back to give an update.  I updated CC to the latest version and this problem has all but gone now.  Well done Adobe.

Anyone having this problem please make sure you have the latest version as before it CC was completely unreliable.  Now it's fixed (in this part - I am just about to post about some new problems I have found).

Thanks

I have latest version of Prem CC and did not help.  Only solution for me was to select all clips and create an AE composition (from perm cc menu) and then I was able within Prem CC to Export/render as h264, just  like normal.

Anyone experiencing this error with the new Premiere Pro CC 2014 released yesterday??

Really curious if it's still hanging on. I seem to have got past the part where this errror stops my exports which is great, but now I'm experiencing an issue where there's random audio glitches in some of my exports. One format will have it at one point, another format a totally different point with no logical reason as to why. I'm using the same cameras with the same format that I've used the last 2 years so why now? Even if it's related to the MPE or CUDA or OpenCL, why now? Why didn't this happen my first 1.5 years or even the first several months of the last version of CC? I export videos to 4-5 formats and some videos are 1+ hours so I can't exactly watch them all the way through. I seem to have hit there point where my Premiere Pro CC and AME CC exporting experience is falling apart. To say this is frustrating is quite an understatement. It's 330pm and I'm already drinking.

I sincerely hope the new "2014" version of PPro and AME clears things up. Anyone??
