"maximise render quality" ruins the render quality

i just rendered out 2 short films with the maximise render quality check box ticked,  the result is that the render quality was much much worse with the box ticked than not ticked

is there something im missing here ? or is this another bug with v 2017 ?

Here's a good article explaining the use ... and non-use ... of that option. If you're not changing frame-size, and don't have a lot of dark shadows ... probably does nothing to help.

That doesn't necessarily do what you might think it does ... I think it has to do with some tech issues in codecs (forgot which) and has a non-descriptive name. So if you get better results with it off, leave it off. No harm is done to your pixels ...
