video and audio are displayed as two solid green blocks instead of showing sequences of shots and audio clips.
How do I display the sequences in the timeline instead of solid green blocks?

Open your origional sequence with the solid blobs, then delete the blobs. Click on the top left icon and drag your material into the timeline, it should now come in as separate tracks.

OK, so I feel stupid. The reason why sequences were appearing as green blocks was that I was not in editing mode. As soon as I clicked the editing mode the sequences appeared normally.
Matter closed.
