Shortcuts don’t work on undocked timeline panel in 2 monitor setup

Context:

I have 2 monitors (may or may not be relevant). When I open up Premiere Pro 2023 (23.4.0) I have a workspace that sets up the main Premiere window in the left monitor, and a timeline panel - undocked - in the right monitor. For the longest time I would extend the main Premiere window to 2 screens when Premiere opened, but the new full screen Export window looks absurd in this setup, so I stopped doing that. Instead I created a workspace with an undocked Timeline on its own monitor.

The problem:

When opening the Premiere Application by double clicking on a project, some of my shortcuts don’t work in that undocked timeline panel. I can’t delete clips, I can’t play/pause. I can do some things like Match Frame, change clip color, or zoom in/out of the timeline. But I can’t do other things, like ‘find clip in bin’ or moving a clip up and down 1 track, moving a clip at all or slipping a clip with shortcuts.

Workarounds/Fixes:

–Opening the Premiere application first, and then opening the project fixes this issue.

–Closing the project, (not the app) and then reopening the project.

–Closing the Timeline panel, and then reopening it.

I know this isn’t the worst thing in the world given how easy it is to workaround, but it seems to be a bug, so I wanted to report it.

I don’t know if this is relevant, but on my Mac, under “Mission Control”, I have the “Displays have separate Spaces” unchecked. I feel like most people don’t do this, but I like having the option to extend windows across two displays.

I don’t know if this is new to Premiere 2023; I just started experiencing it since I changed my workspace to accommodate the full screen Export window, which was not designed to extend across 2 monitors. I skipped 2022.

Hi @MikeJM,

I read your note. Sorry for the dual screen funkiness. It sounds similar to this issue: https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-discussions/dual-monitor-issues-losing-pr-functionality/m-p/13232210#M432618 Doesn't it?

Sorry for the frustration. I hope the product team will be able to reproduce the case and fix it for you. Any other info you can give? How do I write a bug report?

Have a great weekend.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the reply.

Apparently the 2 monitors wasn't the issue. I still had the problem with 1
monitor. But after doing some more testing, I think it might have something
to do with custom shortcuts. I was able to reliably reproduce the issue,
but after messing around with new custom shortcuts and the defaults, it
happens off and on, and I can't really make heads or tails of why.

It's super bizarre and I can work around it pretty easily, but here's the
bug info:

Issue - Opening Premiere project directly from a .prproj file results in
undocked timeline panels not responding to certain keyboard shortcuts
initially. Might only happen when using a custom shortcut layout.

Adobe Premiere Pro version number: 23.4.0

Operating system: MacOS Big Sur - 11.7.5

System Info: MacPro 2019

CPU - 3.3 GHz 12-Core Intel Xeon W

GPU - AMD Radeon Pro 580X 8GB

RAM - 32GB 2933 MHz DDR4 Memory

Hard Drive - 1TB APFS SSD

Workflow details: Any project sequence open in the undocked Timeline panel
is affected.

Steps to reproduce -

0: Possibly make sure you're using a custom shortcut layout.

1: Undock a Timeline panel with at least 1 sequence in it. Save and close
the project.

2: Close Premiere completely.

3: Double click that .prproj file to open it in Premiere.

4: Try to delete a clip from the undocked Timeline Panel. Try to press play
with spacebar.

Expected result - The clip in the sequence should have been deleted, and
the sequence should have played.

Actual result - Delete key doesn't function in that undocked timeline, and
the spacebar doesn't either. None of the main keyboard keys seem to do
anything. Some function shortcuts work but I haven't done extensive tests
as to what works and why.
How I can work around the issue - Open Premiere first, then open the
project. Or close undocked timeline panel and reopen it.
