Show duplicate frames?

Can't get my head around what 'show duplicate frames' is actually doing in PPro.

It *seems* to be showing frames that are used *somewhere* in the project - i.e. even if I know that the shot is not duplicated in this sequence it shows as so.

BUT it doesn't seem to be consistent - e.g. I make a copy of the sequence and some of the shots show as duplicated, others don't.

Anyone have the true skinny on this?
