Slow performance on a very fast computer

Explorer ,
Jan 25, 2024 Jan 25, 2024

Hello! Any tips on improving edit performance? I have a very fast, expensive computer, but editing lags and stutters with yellow or red preview bars.

It's just a 1280x720 edit, not a 4k or anything like that

===========

Dell Precision 7780

Windows 11 64 bit
13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-13950HX 2.20 GHz
NVIDIA RTX™ 4000 Ada 12GB GDDR6
64.0 GB RAM

===========
52 GB RAM allotted to Premiere

**** UPDATE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS ****

It looks like it's due to dependent files being on OneDrive - starting a brand new project showed no issues.

Localizing them (right-click, "Always Keep on This Device") should resolve the issue.

New info: I started a brand new project and started adding the same clips to edit, and things are moving quickly, no issues.

So, it looks like it's a problem with the project, not the install or settings.

It looks like it might be all due to an included graphic element.

Dropped my playback down to 1/2 quality to help...which I feel I shouldn't have to do on a beast of a machine like mine.

Wondering if it's some Dell app interfering now?

It's not like a desktop, that's for sure. But 720p footage shouldn't be requireing that. If you have anymore info we could go on. Otherwise, it's clearing the cache, resetting the prefs back to stock. Hold down the shift key when you start PP to get a dialog to do just that.

Thanks, I appreciate it. Yes, I cleared the cache, which sort of helps, but it's very bad. Almost unusably bad.

The footage is 1920x1080 and I'm editing it down to 720. It's just an interview - nothing fancy. Very straightforward stuff.

Delete the Media Cache and Media Cache files:
https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro/faq-how-to-clear-your-media-cache-in-30-seconds-in-premi...

If that doesn't work, try resetting the preferences:
https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro/faq-how-to-reset-trash-preferences-in-premiere-pro/td-p/...

If that doesn't work, try resetting the Workspaces:
Reset a workspace
Reset the current workspace to return to its original, saved layout of panels.
1. Do one of the following:
• Click the Workspace menu icon and select Reset to Saved Layout.
• Choose Window > Workspace > Reset to Saved Layout.
from here:
https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/workspaces.html

If that doesn't work, try Preferences > Audio Hardware and set Input to None.

If that doesn’t work, try updating or rolling back your graphics driver directly from the video card manufacturer’s site. If NVIDIA, do a clean installation of the latest Studio Driver (NOT the Game Driver).

If that doesn't work, try creating a new project and import the old one into it.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I tried the first set of tips and will look at the driver next.

I'm suspecting that somewhere along the way, Premiere isn't being allowed to use the correct vid card and is defaulting to the Intel on-board card. Just a hypothesis.

What are the  hard drives (how many, what kind, what is on each, what capacity, and how full)?

I'm having the same problems. I'm running premiere 25.1.0 and it feels sluggish and really not how I image it running on a machine like mine.

Here's a few problems I'm facing.

It can take upto 45 seconds just to load the welcome screen. Then when I click to open a project that can take anywhere from 20 to 50 seconds to open. Even then when it does open loads of the video files don't load.

If i render a timeline and close premiere down and re open it, the timeline needs to be returned rendered.

The playhead sticks and causes the program to hang for upto 2 minutes.

Moving the colour sliders in Lumetri don't work correctly. When I click and drag a slider I'm not seeing any change untill I let go of the mouse button.

Proxies don't seem to help. I'm editing 5.8K footage from the GH6. I've made proxies and it's painfully slow, to the point where I have to triple check I have proxies enabled.

The machine I'm running is

Windows 11 pro upto date

Nvidia 4090 up to date

64GB DDR 5 ram

Programs are on a fast 1TB Nvme drive.

Footage is stored on an internal 4TB Samsung 990 Pro NMVe drive

I have media cache and scratch disc saved to another internal NVMe drive.

So please any help would be greatful.

I have a similar system to you with a 4070, and it's works well here. Did you clear the cache with the upgrade? Holding down shift as you start PP and select from the dialog. You may want to clear the preferences also, and the 3rd-party cache from the same dialog. Your drives are certainly fast enough. Do they have enough free space to work comfortably?

Yeah I've clear the cache and reset preferences. And there's plenty of room on the hard drives. I'm at a loose end as to what the problem is. I only have a few plug ins Neat video, film convert, flicker free and red giant universe and magic bullet. I'm wondering if it's red giant. I have a perpetual license and It hasn't been updated since I think 2021. This is the only thing I think it could be. But even when I'm not using red giant, the machine is still slow.

You didn't mention your processor, but I'm sure it's something comparable to the rest of the rig, which seems to be very good. It shouldn't be that slow. Do you have Creative Cloud desktop open when you start PP. There was something to do with ccLibraries, that caused a 26 second delay when opening a project with if I remember right was the lumetri panel was on the PP workspace. Otherwise your options are low, how are the other CC aps working?

I have the intel 14900k processor. I don't tend to have creative cloud app open when I launch premiere. After effects, audition and photoshop seem to be fine.

I'm hoing to uninstall red giant perpetual products tomorrow to see if that's the problem. I think the licence is from 2021, so I'm hoping that as they don't update on a perpetual license.

Indeed, nice rig! 🙂

Can you start a brand new project, and give it a try. The OP had a OneDrive issue. So, making sure of things like that. I'd clear the cache before you make a test program. Let us know.

Yes indeed, it WAS a OneDrive issue for me. (OP)

In other instances, it's been a matter of updated all the Creative Cloud apps. Ah, the modern app landscape. It's great and it's awful.
