Text-Based editing WITH Text for Narrator?

Guest
Dec 07, 2023 Dec 07, 2023

I am new to text based editing and so far, it sounds very promising.

Usually I have to simultaneously work on the edit while I am writing the Text for the Narrator, so it fits to the edited bits. Can I achieve all of this in the Transcript-Window?

I am only able to edit the transcribed voice bits OR convert everything to a static text.

Is there any way to keep text based editing active and just add my own text for the narrator inbetween?

This should be very simple.. its just a text. Am I asking too much?

How is your workflow to get to the final film script?

Currently, this is not possible, as the Transcript tab is based on actual audio in sequences. So unless you do a VO recording you won't be able to feed it into the Transcript tab.

Maybe @Ann Bens or @Stan Jones could help with this ...

Thanks.. Even in the static transcription I cannot just add text, I can only edit the blocks that are transcribed. So I guess the workflow is still to export a text files or copy the text over and then continue. Or is there any other way?

Thanks! I hope this feature will be added soon. Usually the talent needs a script to record his VO - he does not freestyle a VO so it can be transcribed later on. 😉

Peter,

This is an interesting, real-world workflow challenge. And I like that @Annika Koenig has commented. It never hurts to be on her radar! In the meantime, let's brainstorm workarounds.

I think you have 2 challenges. Does text-based editing help you create the VO script?

I would experiment with recording my own VO rather than typing it in. Then you can use speech-to-text to create a transcript/script.

Second, as it is being created, can you use the script in the editing process?

This may involve overlapping transcripts. If the edit includes dialogue, you must pick which transcript to see. For example, I think I might put the voice-over audio on the higher audio track (i.e. top/Audio 1 track) and the video dialogue on track 2. In the Text panel/Transcript tab, you would see your VO transcript. To see the dialogue, just mute Track 1.

Or you could create captions from the dialogue track and see those on screen as you work on the VO.

I have experimented with using the "import corrected transcript" feature for a variety of workarounds.

Let us know how you proceed. Staff are actively developing these features, so it is a good time for feedback. And there are many options for workarounds.

Stan

Thanks for your help!

Unfortunately just freestyle-record ist not an option.

In Broadcast-Workflows you always write your text first, when everything is finished you record your VO.

I think its like that in all media production so it would be great if this tool could help us.

This is the one way in which Descript is superior to Premiere Pro for audio podcast production. But Descript's transcripts are painfully bad and it's pretty crude overall. I've decided to opt for Premiere Pro but would greatly appreciate the ability to add text during the podcast composition process, so that I can do the VO at the end in the usual way.
