Timeline randomly out of sync on restart

Hello,

We are currently editing a feature film on 3 workstations, all connected to a shared NAS in a post house.

1 of the workstations are getting a unique problem. Every day when the editor opens the project the timeline has shifted on random points. Meaning the picture is out of sync from sound. Its completely random, and on different places each time. We have found no system or method in it.

It is a quick fix when it is only in scene sequences which lasts a few minutes. However when the timeline is over 1-2 hours long its becoming extremely tedious. It also then comes down to the editors memory of how the scene actually was.

The project has been moved from a Avid project (I know bad idea) and it needs to move back to Avid at some point. Because of this the project is synced through subclips rather than merged clips. (Avid instantly synces the subclips back but wont touch merged clips). It feels like the subclips are the cause of the issue but not quite sure how.

The following has been done -

- Generated new project file and sequences.

- Switched the actual hardware and re-installed premiere.

- Switched NAS mounting method.

- Cleaned local cache

- Changed media path.

It is edited on a MacPro on CC 17.

It is worth to mention that this is only related to this single project, not other projects being done on the same workstation.

I understand that this might be a unique problem, and would greatly appreciate if anyone have any suggestions.

Hi uhoert_tech,

Sorry about this annoying issue.

What is the source of your footage? What happens if you keep those clips on the local drive?

Please share your system specs and how fast is your server?

Thanks,

Kulpreet Singh

Hi Kulpreet,

Thank you for your reply.

The footage is originally shot on Alexa however it has been transcoded for offline. All the footage is transcoded to DnX36 1080p

We are currently on about 2.5 TB of footage which is why it is not locally.

The server is a EVO Share on a 1 GB local network. So read write speeds on max 100 mb/s.

Had the feeling that this was a cache issue or a issue with sub clips.

Thanks for the additional information.

  • What is the exact version of Premiere Pro (check in the help menu)?
  • Are you working on an updated project or is this a new project?
  • Import your file in a new project and check if you are seeing same issue in the new project.

Had the feeling that this was a cache issue or a issue with sub clips.

Try cleaning the media cache. FAQ: How to clean media cache files?

Hello Kulpreet,

It is currently running on 11.1.2

When the error started occurring we created a new clean project and re-created the project from there. The major issue is the face that it is random, and not easy to replicate.

It happens on a different sequence each day and on different cuts. Sometimes cuts that has had the error, and sometimes new ones.

We have done a complete reset of the cache on several occasions. We have even gone as far as changing the actual computer to a different one.

In the beginning we kinda assumed it was PIPNIC (Problem In Person Not In Computer) however it now seems there is actually something going on. Unfortunately it is random and not easy to replicate.

I have been having a very similar issue.

I'm working on a large project with multiple editors. We share project files and periodically some of the clips within a sequence will be out of place when opened on a different system. The problem occurs intermittently on different systems and seems to be very random.

We are all using Macs and Premiere Pro 13.2.

This is a huge problem for us and taking up a lot of valuable time in re-edits and troubleshooting.

I'd really appreciate any insight in fixing it!
