Transform Effect not working properly when Shutter Speed is set to 180 on CUDA Playback

Community Beginner ,

I recently upgraded to the latest version from 2015, and one of the common tools I use in my content is the Distort - Transform effect to make Text pop in and out. In the current version, when I apply the Transform effect and set the Shutter Speed to 180 while using CUDA Playback, a couple of things go wrong.

The first frame that the Text is visible, the Transform effect is not applied. If the Text Scale is set to 0 and the playhead is over a part of the object where it is 0, the entire screen goes black.

At first, I thought this might be an issue with my GPU, but I have tested it on my other high end PC and confirmed the bug also exists there.

This issue does not exist in Mercury Software Only Playback. Which would be great, but using that causes a lot more problems. The software will occasionally go through big lag spikes even on my $4000 PC. Then of course, if I use the Transform effect the way I like to using Software only, I can't render using CUDA. It just fails. Software only rendering is incredibly slow and provides lower image quality, so I really don't want to use this as a long term solution.

I hope that this is a bug that can be fixed, it never existed in my old version!

Hi Dylan28878845x6h7,

We're sorry about the poor experience. Which driver type are you using for your NVIDIA GPU (Game Ready drivers or Studio drivers)? If you are using Game Ready drivers, please try installing the latest Studio driver for your GPU & check if it's working properly.

Thanks,

Sumeet

Hi Sumeet,

I have tried on both my work PC using a GTX 1050 with the latest studio driver and on my home PC with an RTX 4080.

Same result each time. Whenever Transform is applied to Text and Shutter Speed is set to 180 using CUDA playback, the issues begin to occur.

I got it to happen, but I did a lot of clicking to get there. And I'm not sure what I did!

Can you provide a step by step as I don't know what you mean by "pop in and out". There are different ways to move the text around including the Vector Motion controls which didn't seem to make it happen. Let us know.

I create Text and apply the Transform effect, and I set the scale to 0. I then set it up so that the scale increases to 110, then down to 95, then to 100. It makes the text "pop in", which looks fine, but I like the way it looks with the motion blur effect caused by adjusting the shutter speed. With the shutter speed set to 180, not only does the first visible frame of the Text not have any scale applied, but after the text has popped out it makes the video all black throughout any overhang on the object.

Again, this works perfectly fine in Software Only, just seems to be bugged on CUDA.

Hi Sumeet,
Thanks for taking an interest in the bug.
For me, the problem occurs with footage that has a different resolution than my sequence setting.

Here's how to replicate the bug:

1) Put a 3840 x 2160 clip in a 1920 x 1080 sequence.

2) Apply the Transform effect on the clip.

3) Adjust any of the settings in the Transform effect: Position/Scale/Rotation etc.

4) Change Shutter Angle to anything other than 0. The clip's postion will shift.

Please I hope someone on the team tests this, acknowledge the bug, and let us know if it will be fixed! Even if it will never be fixed, I hope you will let us know too.  Like the orignal poster said, this problem didn't exist 5/6 years ago when the trashcan Mac Pros were still around.

I am currently having to dynamic link to AE just so I can have motion blur. This is manageable if I am making videos on my own from offline to delivery but I think most of us are professionals working with multiple collaborators who will take on the project after the Offline edit is done. Dynamic links are a bane to handover especially when we just needed to toggle on a motion blur to sell the transition or an effect during an offline presentation.

Tried all my Mac computers at work (iMac, iMac Pro, Macbook Pros, Mac Studio, both Intel and Apple Silicon computers). All with latest OS and latest Premiere Pro.
