That particular timeline layout is called 'pancake' (two sequences on top of each other) but usually when you open two sequences they will become two tabs in your sequence panel, with only one sequence visible at a time.

To get back your 'pancake' you'll need to drag the non-visible sequence tab - click and hold in the area where the tabs name appears. Now drag down until the panel highlights automatically where it will drop, release the mouse and there you go.
