Unable to open due to deleted folders

Community Beginner ,

Sooo I'm in a bit of a pickle. I'm all new to Adobe software (I really only use Premiere Pro and After Effects) so I've basically been figuring stuff out through trial and error. Unfortunately, this causes a bunch of technical errors because, ya know, you don't know what you don't know. In an effort to clear space on my computer, I deleted a bunch of thought to be "random" folders, such as 22.0, Adobe, etc, all the ones that automatically pop up on your computer after installing Adobe apps. Now, I'm unable to open neither Premier Pro nor After Effects without some kind of error popping up. I'm not sure if this was due to me deleting the folders but that was the only sensical explantion I could come up with on my own. I've scowered forums but haven't found any concrete solution. I have project files on those apps for my job so needless to say I'm freaking out. Anyone know what's going on and how I can fix it??? Thank you!!!

These apps have numerous folders of files *required* for them to run at. All. Don't go around just deleting files unless you know exactly what they are.

At this time, go to the CC Desktop app, use that to uninstall Pr and Ae. Then reinstall them from the CC app.

When I uninstall them, will it delete projects I've been working on? That's been my biggest fear in this whole process.

Okay, so I tried what you suggested and it didn't work, because apparently I've dug myself into a whole and the ground his collapsed over me. What next?

Gahl,

> ya know, you don't know what you don't know.

lol. How true. And yes, trial and error involves some errors. And some errors can be hard to undo. I agree with Neil's recommendation to reinstall.

When you uninstall/reinstall, be sure to backup all your project/media files. When I do any Adobe updates/installs, I always clone my hard drive so I can go back.

You'll see many posts about how to organize drives and project/media files. Read up on this.

I'm on Windows, so that's what I'm using as a reference. Your PR/AE "preferences" are in the folders inside your Documents folder. Documents -> Adobe -> Premiere Pro -> [Version, e.g. 23.0]. And a bunch of stuff in there that keeps any custom settings you make. If you delete any/all of that, it just takes you back to the defaults. EXCEPT it is also the default place for creating projects. So make sure you put your Project files and Media in their own folders outside of any Adobe folders. If you want to keep anything in those folders, back them up. For example, custom workspaces or keyboard shortcuts are in files inside those folders.

There is also a lot of stuff in the User folders, but you're less likely to mess with those. And never mess with the files in the Program Files.

How do I back up my After Effects when I can't open it? That's really the only one I have open projects on

You backup the project files, not the app itself.

Where did you tell it to put your project files? Copy that folder.

You seem knowledgable in this subject so I'll come back to you. I tried uninstalling EVERYTHING, like the whole CC and all the apps and reinstalled them and it still pops up with the error message, so I don't really know what to do...

In addition, I'm looking to upgrade my computer anyway because I'm working on a MacBook Air and it's obviously not ideal for editing. My question is, will this problem transfer over to my new Apple computer when I get it?

I would say to forget about it and wait until I have a new computer but you know, that thing called work that absolutely requires me to have a working computer in the meantime...

Gahl,

Thanks for reporting back. Sorry you weren't lucky on the reinstall. I would use the "Cleaner" tool.

See this post for more troubleshooting tips:

If it was working on your hardware before, it should still work.
