Updated my GPU to RTX 5080 but playback keeps lagging

Until this week, I was using my RTX 3060 and decided to upgrade to the newly arrived RTX 5080 ( in hopes of making playback smoother. To my surprise, I didn't notice any difference. I edit 4K clips in an HD timeline with only one clip stacked on top of another (a 2-camera interview

Here are my system specs and setup:

• GPU: RTX 5080
• CPU: Ryzen 9 5950x
• RAM: 32GB 
• Storage: All media is stored on an 2TB SSD 
• Sequence Settings: 1920x1080, 23.98fps
• Renderer: Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (CUDA). 

Any thoughts?

Hi @Struggle27618002ijc9 - What type of media are you working with?  Not all formats are hardware-accelerated by the GPU, though many are. PugetBench has a great article outlining which codecs and formats benefit from GPU acceleration and which do not. What H.264 and H.265 Hardware Decoding is Supported in Premiere Pro?

Hi @Struggle27618002ijc9 -  You definitely chose the right GPU for your footage.  You're working with H264 10bit 422 media.  NVIDIA 50-series cards now support hardware acceleration for 422 media. Premiere Pro currently offers 422 hardware acceleration in the Beta version. If you’re able to, I recommend downloading the Beta to try it out. Hi all, I am experiencing exactly the same issue with RTX 5080 laptop GPU in my new ASUS G16 RTX 5080 version. I did a side-by-side comparison. RTX 4060 in my 2024 G14 has no problem handling exactly the same DJI footage. With every criteria almost exactly the same, except for the CPU being AMD on G14. Attached video as proof:

There are massive issues with Nvidia's new 50 series cards across all pro video post apps. I work in Resolve as well as Premiere, and it's the same 'over there'.

So ... there are some folks that have got going with a BIOS change, some with a Windows setting change, some with a driver change, and some simply RMA'd their card.

The companies are working on it, but it's not "Adobe specific". Freaking mess but oh well.
