v22.0 project won't open in v22.4 - PP crashes trying to open the project

Hi

A recent project created in PP v22.0 won't open in v22.4. If I roll back to 22.0 it opens fine but as soon as I update to 22.4 PP crashes as it tries to open the project. It get's about 2/3 of the way in before reporting a serious error occurred etc.

Any ideas what might be causing this? I've tried delting the media from the project and importing into a new 22.4 project - rather than opening it - but the same result.

Thanks

Try this:

  1. Launch Pr from a shortcut (Dock, Launchpad, Desktop) while holding down the Shift+Opt keys.  Opt resets prefs and Shift clears plugin cache.
  2. Keep the keys pressed until the main program window appears.
  3. Before trying to open any project or starting a new one, go to Preferences>Media Cache and delete *all* your media cache files.
  4. Now try opening a project or starting a new one.

(Adjust as necessary for Windows machines)

Thanks Jeff

I'll try that tomorrow and let you know.

I've tried delting the media from the project

I assume you meant media cache.

If so, and the suggestion by Jeff Bellune doesn't work,  just a guess at a workaround:

Delete the Media Cache and Media Cache files:

Then, instead of importing, try copying the sequence(s) from the old project and paste it in to the new project and relink the media if necessary.

Thanks Bob

I did mean the media as some of it is weird smartphone generated and edited material that I thought might be upsetting Premiere. But I'll delete the caches as you suggest.

If you do that, try importing into a new project before copying sequences.

Thanks for the advice folks.

I've tried Jeff's suggestion and deleted the plug-in and media caches and also tried importing just a sequence rather than the whole project into a new project in v22.4 but Premiere still crashing.

Then, instead of importing, try copying the sequence(s) from the old project and paste it in to the new project and relink the media if necessary.

Not sure how I would copy and paste a sequence as I can't open the old project unless I roll back to v22.0 - am I missing something here? Happy to try something else though...

Are you able to import the old wonky media into a fresh, blank 22.4 project?

Yes, the media imports to a new project.

Okay, so the media itself isn't the problem. Something about how Pr has handled that media in the past is giving it grief now.

I recommend you move the media to a different location (but not in the same path that it's in now). Different drive, different top-level folder, something like that.

Then do the media cache cleanup I posted earlier, again. Try to open your project and relink the media. If it still crashes, try to import the project into a new, blank 22.4 project. If that doesn't work, then you may be stuck with re-creating the project in 22.4.

Thanks Jeff

Tried all of your suggestions but no luck - PP still crashes trying to open the project. I also tried just importing a sequence from that project (with the now unlinked media) and PP did not ctash but said 'could not open the project' so I guess it's something about the whole project and not the media or sequence. Anyway, thanks, but as I've finished that job now I'll let it go - hopefully a one off!
