Video rotated automatically when inserting

Community Beginner ,
Jul 13, 2018 Jul 13, 2018

I am inserting a file into a sequence that is 1920*1080

The file resolution is: 2048*858

When I drag an drop it in the sequence, it comes rotated automatically 90 degrees clockwise.

I check the effects control tab, nothing is there

Very interesting. Media info has a rotation flag that shows under the video section. And it does not show  for this clip, so that flag is not set. I do not know if Premiere Pro reads that flag to determine rotation. But I think it must, because it's some rotated footage is read correctly. I wonder if there's an app that can set that flag for this footage, and within allow PR to read it correctly.

It worked in 2017. The same exact clip imports perfectly into 2017, but not in 2018. It probably happened when they rewrote the QT importer module. I don't see what you are referring to in the video section of the example I gave. besides the image is not rotated. It is actually known as Sensor Flipped on the Arri. That means it is both rotated 180 degrees and Flipped so a rotation flag is not going to solve the problem. That is why when a 2017 project with these clips is imported into a 2018 project they are still upside down. This shows to me that they actually dropped the flag for the clip itself.

Right; it is only listed if it is set. And good point; it is not "rotation" as such.

Thanks Kevin. What a dumb mess. Would be weird if doing grading first is necessary BEFORE editing.  duh.

Is that a real anamorphic lens on your camera ? I know some guy who started shooting today with alexa with anamorphic ( basically for the 'look' (horizontal flare, etc.), probably 4/3 crop, like old film 2 perf. But network doesn't want to go letterbox, so they are gonna lop of the ends for 16:9 full hd.

Your stuff would have to be letterboxed right ??

Yep real anamorphic. We ran into the same issue everything was discussed about the look and letterbox beforehand, but someone up the chain did not like the letterbox. We had to reframe the whole thing.

Kevin, thanks so much for info and time spent to explain stuff. I can hardly believe in the same thread there is discussion about iPhone imports and Alexa imports having similar problems with rotating frames ( not reading meta data correctly ), etc.

What a crazy world.

The thing is that Metadata is a double edged sword. While it gives us a lot of extra information, any manufacturer can create their own keys. It is then up to the folks at Adobe to figure out what to do with that data. Camera manufacturers are forever adding their own info into metadata, but if Adobe does not know about or they get the info wrong then we are in this position.

The original poster does not want to do any work but with a small effort all clips can be put straight.

Or use 2017 which imports the clip correct.

Hey guys, I'm having the same issue with Arri image (shot with the camera flipped on a Steadicam). Rotating the image is no issue, but if you want to create proxies then it all becomes a mess. Any ideas how best to work around this? Thanks!

If you don't have this tool I would suggest you get it. I find it indispensable when trying to figure out how certain shots were filmed in the field when the AC does not provide a complete set of notes. It is called Mediainfo. if you are on a mac it's on the app store. CHEAP!!

Ahh! I use Mediainfo and I overlooked those fields. I'm not terribly familiar with ARRI metadata.

Good catch on the ImageOrientation. Here's the thing: I think CC2017 is actually importing the file incorrectly which results in the proper orientation. CC2018 is actually reading the ARRI metadata flags, seeing the ImageOrientation flag, and then following that flag by orienting the video resulting in the sideways and flipped video.

I did find this obscure metadata heading in Premiere under EXIF Schema for TIFF Properties/Orientation.

Unfortunately Premiere has no method of disabling or ignoring these attributes.

Don't ask how I know where to look for this stuff:

<VideoStream ObjectID="185" ClassID="a36e4719-3ec6-4a0c-ab11-8b4aab377aa5" Version="16">

        <FrameRate>10594584000</FrameRate>

        <FrameRect>0,0,2048,858</FrameRect>

        <Duration>76291599384000</Duration>

        <CodecType>1634743400</CodecType>

        <OriginalImageOrientationType>4</OriginalImageOrientationType>

    </VideoStream>

Don't know exactly what the other numbers that could fit in there.
