I've watched tutorials on how to use the write on effect for text, however, I want to use this effect on an image to simulate a drawing effect. I tried this on an image with a transparent backgroud, but the image shows up in bits and pieces and is not really visible at all. Why is this happening? Do I have to use after effects for this to work?

It will be much better in AE. The Write-On effect in PP doesn't even work well for text, let alone applying it to an image. Depending on what you are after, we may be able to comment. But AE has way more capability for these kind of things.

You tried what? You haven't described what it is that you actually did and in turn it's not possible to comment on what you're actually doing. Mostly this is done with animated masks, is this what you're doing and it's not working?

I added a transparent video above the image layer. Then I applied the write on effect on the transparent video where I brushed over the image gradually using key frames to reveal the image. Then I applied the track matte key effect to the image layer.

But I took your advice and used the animated mask which worked dececnt.  The only problem was that it was tedious to maake the mask area smaller as I had to adjust the mask points and I wasnt able to delete points and use key frames at the same time.
