What the heck is match by name doing in painter?

I'm using Houdini and I put path, name and shop_materialpath attributes on my mesh and Painter does not recognize either of those attributes in match by name. The only thing that works is using alembic and pressing the build hierarchy. This puts a forward slash before the name in painter. So, If I have a mesh from somewhere else with a particular name that I want want to match I don't know how to do except recaching everything using alembic with the build hierarchy ticked on. Why cant this thing just recognize a name or path attribute? aaaaaaarrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not everybody uses maya or blender man! damn! Recognizing geometry attributes should work right across the board.

What I'm saying is that it would make sense if substance just looked for a name attribute on the mesh. That doesn't seem to be what it's doing; What is the way to save a .USD file and get painter to recognize it in the "match by names" parameter in the baker? I've tried name, path, shop_materialpath attributes and none of them works.

Hello Patrick,

Thanks for the message.

I am not entirely sure to get the issue correctly (I am clearly not a Houdini expert), so would you mind sharing screenshots of your workflow?

Substance 3D Painter's bake matching by Name works simply by reading the geometry's names and whatever your file format is, it should have geometries with names. If the suffix doesn't fit your needs (_high and _low) you can change it in the baking parameters.

Best regards,
