I just noticed something odd. The previous worker laboring on this file created an Alternate Layout. Under the pages panel, I can see that one is called: Letter V and the other is called: ...W Alternate Layout. I did a search for an unusual phrase in a 2-page spread that I added just today (again). Stangely, the new 2-page spread that I added today is in Letter V but NOT in W Alternate Layout. I wonder why. Could this be related to my problem?

I have done preference reset many times Ctrl + Alt + Shift (Windows) - but I am NOT asked about replacing preferences. Instead, I am asked, "do you want this app to make changes to your device?" I answer, "Yes." Adobe seems to be unrolling my most recent version of the document. How can this be my error? You can perhaps see why I am so desperate with my 150+ page document that I need to work on and finish. Q - Should I save the file somewhere that Adobe cannot find it? Q - I may have missed some error messages. Is there a place where I can check and see the status of "syncs"?

Whether or not I create a PDF: if I save changes, close InDesign, and then reopen, the file I find my changes are a-okay. It is only after Adobe CC processes - or does whatever - with my files over a period of several hours (it seems to occur overnight) do my edits disappear.

2017.1 of InDesign, 12.1.0.56 I can edit and save but later those 'saves' are gone, except in pdf - if I exported. I should not continue my project at this point (150+pages into it) until I can know that my time is not wasted. WIndows 10, InDesign CC Over and over I am finding InDesign to be unstable/unreliable. I have put my CC folder in Drive D (is that a problem) which is cavernous - I just moved it there as a supposed solution to my overly full Drive C but I continue to have the problem of saved files not saving. I know the file has been saved because of creating a pdf of some of the changed pages for a proofreader plus I LOOKED at where and what I was saving, doing "save as". I have reset preferences as recommended. Would it be better to go on ebay and find an older (non-CC) version? Would this version of an INDD file work in an older InDesign version? The problem of saved material disappearing is back with a vengeance! I am wondering if the problem could be that CC does not work properly unless it is in the C drive? The new CC that I have I put on my D drive. The indd files now show the last date modified at 2-10-2018, the day that I moved the CC and everything seemed to be on-track again. Even though I save and save and created a copy, they all say that they were last modified on that day and I have lost many, many hours of work on all the days since the 10th. As I saved, I would check to make sure that I was working on the D drive and yet today when I went to work, one of the files is on the C drive! Yes, I realize it must somehow be user error, but I do not know how! You may say that I must have the file named as something else. Well, I took a unique phrase that has been added since the 10th and did a Windows search and it does not appear anywhere on my D drive. (Do Windows searches work with INDD files?) You may say that I should do the Shift-Alt-Enter reset of preferences. I have done that several times this afternoon and it does not help. Do I somehow not have enough space???

Oh yes, I met someone who uses Blurb and she uses it for all her travel albums (I think not with InDesign but their proprietary system??). I was put off by the pricing but maybe I should go with Blurb. It appears that one can use the InDesign Blurb plugin to create and convert your document to PDF. Once you produce the PDF I expect that then you still have the option to print with Blurb OR another company.

Since I am going to all sorts of trouble to learn Indesign for other purposes, I am thinking that I might as well also use it for logging my recent trip to South America, rather than using proprietary services such as Snapfish, Shutterfly, etc. I expect to do about 100 pages but only want two or three copies - most companies require 6 copies. What DO people who use InDesign use for this sort of a home project?

Not sure if the re-set of app preferences played a role in the solution. By itself it did nothing, but I did it several times, including after moving the cc folder to drive D, so perhaps.

Windows 10, CC Indesign 2016. Okay, I thought I had plenty of space on my C drive as I had solved a previous problem (exports that reflected a previous version of the InDesign file) by deleting many, many files. So... this time I moved my CC folder to D drive which has 1 Terabyte free and, after a couple hours, the file reflected the current edits that had seemed to be lost forever... now I am operating fine. Lesson learned - I must retain HUGE expanses of open space to work.

Right or wrong, I made this top line of a column 'drop cap' 19 size. I want it to not be indented on the left but whatever I does nothing or creates havoc/disaster. an Examples: 1 - If I delete the line, the entire page of text disappears!! 2 - If I try to justify or Align Left nothing happens. 3 - If I try to backspace over those letters to delete them or change the drop cap to zero or to another number, both pages in the layout go wacky:

I have inherited a file with an alternate layout. I want to rename the current one as it is long and too much to type for doing export to pdf printing. It is now called, "WWP Alternate Layout" It looks like it is fine to rename my alternate layout in the pages panel at the top of the column. It there any danger? I want to rename it as "A4" as it is for 11"x8.5". the other is now called, "Letter V" and I would like to label it "NS" as it is for a non-standard size of paper (I forget the size actually) that we have rejected.

IDML, yes I did try that yesterday but it gave me a file that was a stripped down version of my document, about a third of the size, and seemed to cause to go wrong with my computer. I resisted going away but I finally deleted it. HOWEVER, I did solve the problem. I went into my hard drive and got rid of a bunch of files and freed up a bunch of space. Then Windows insisted on doing an update and, against my better judgment, I did the update. Other than making Word my pdf default, all went well. I made Adobe my default and now I seem to be back on track.

Okay I did it - control-alt-shift to clear preferences and I got a message asking about allow the application to write to my computer and I said yes. So I guess I did it... but the problem stil persists!!!
