It's not Photoshop's fault, either the browser or OS is adding a background color. Photoshop is accepting whatever is in the clipboard without adding a background.

Do you want to fill the selected area with the Foreground or Background color to modify the mask? Use Alt / Ctrl + Backspace for this, those are the default keyboard shortcuts for that operation.

It may be a good idea to mention the Behind blending mode for the Brush, which will prevent overlap or painting over already painted areas. I should note that I probably do not fully understand what the problem is.

You are using the Image Processor from Bridge > Tools to process images and save them as JPEGs or simply to convert them to JPEG format. Are you utilizing actions to process images? Bridge 15.0.4.534 and Photoshop 26.6.1 do not have any issues converting images to JPEG without additional processing using actions. CR2 format. Please specify your versions and clarify what you are actually doing; a screenshot of the Image Processor dialogue would also be helpful.

As previously mentioned, try reaching out to the artist to update the design to match the new cover dimensions. Otherwise, it's challenging to provide advice on your own since we have no idea how complex the design is. From what I can gather, it's only the width that needs to be updated, this may be easy or very difficult, depending on the design. In some cases, you can utilize automated options in the latest versions of Photoshop: select the empty area and ensure that a small portion of the selection touches the design, then use the Generate feature.
