Yes, because you put down two points for example and say you want a black line in between that is 2 points thick, it doesn't matter how far apart those two points get (or how close for that matter), it will draw that line perfectly. That's why vectors work so well for things like logos. The math part kicks in and figures it out (fortunately you don't need to understand the math part yourself!).You just need to figure out how to manipulate the points and paths by drawing lines or shapes. The thing about vectors is that they are math based and therefore defined by points and paths - that makes them totally scalable which is why they are great for making things like logos. Unlike things typically made in Photoshop which are mostly pixel based, they are not really scalable and become pixelated when scaled up too much. It really depends on what you are trying to achieve. The vector tools in Photoshop are greatly improved, but if you are working with type and logos, it is still best to create them in Illustrator (a vector based program) and bring them into Photoshop as a Smart Object. That way you have the best of both worlds. The Smart Object remains a vector based layer and you can continue to edit it in Illustrator.

Yes, you can install something like Windows Virtual PC or Bootstrap - depends on the Window OS you are trying to install on your MAC and the version of MAC OS that you have and version of Adobe suite. A little research will be needed to get it all working smoothly, if it will depending on the age of everything.

Do you need to keep the rectangles as separate shapes for some reason? If not and they are in separate groups - the white rectangles and black rectangles, you can just merge them into two layers so that you have a white layer and a black layer. You can either use the pull out menu on the layers panels or clicking on the group use the shortcut Ctrl/Cmd E - it will merge the layers in that group. Then you can use the layer mask or one of the other methods described above to get the image to show through.

Are you using the tracing function just because you want to make a pattern? You can leave them in pixel format, but I am also confused by the workflow here. You are probably better leaving them pixel based. Can you explain why you are doing this or what your workflow is so we can better understand.

Go to Object>Expand and under that pop up you can expand the stroke and/or fill. Then you can use either the Shape Builder or Pathfinder tools to create the cut outs you desire.

If the layer is a background layer, click the lock, add a new layer and drag it to the bottom or use the shortcut Cmd+[ and then fill that layer with white and save as a jpg. It should work unless something else is going on, in which case post a screenshot of the image and layers panel.

Graphic style will work really well here. But if you want to create an action, the reason it might not have worked is that when you create an action for a menu item, you need to go to the Action Menu pull out and Insert a Menu Action and it will record what your mouse does. Otherwise it just ignores the mouse action of going to the Effects Menu. Then you can set up your Drop Shadow and it will apply those settings to the action.

You can turn your image into a black and white image using the adjustment layer to push the colors to black and white the way you want and then use a photo adjustment layer to tint the image on top of that. The image might also have an been soften a little.

Have you tried adding a blank layer on top, setting it to color blend mode and sampling the colors surrounding it often to try and get ti out? I tried it on your image and this is the result with a quick attempt. If you sample more often and play with brush size I am sure the results would be much more accurate.

I am not sure what happened, but you should be able to select a section of an image with a lasso tool and apply a blur filter like the gaussian blur applied here. You don't even have to unlock the background layer. Try it again to see if you are getting the same results and if so, post a screen shot so I can see what is going on.

Make sure you select both the original object and the copy before making the transparency mask. You can release the transparency mask if you change your mind. Also, the same mask can be applied to multiple objects.

I'm not 100% sure I am understanding your question, but I think you want to manipulate individual aspects of an AutoCad file that you have imported into Illustrator. Often the file comes in as a group. If this is the case (and you can tell by looking at your layers panel, just select the group and Ungroup (Cmd+Sht+G on a MAC - Ctrl+Sht+G on a PC). I have also found that often instead of closed paths, the objects are made up of individual segments and so I turn the object into a live paint object (select all paths Object>Live Paint) so that I can join them and manipulate as needed. Hope this is what you meant.

Make sure that the fill, not the outline is selected. Also, it looks like you might have placed an image into Illustrator. You can't fill a pixel image, you would need to first redraw it with the pen tool (or pencil) or use Object>Image Trace to turn it into a vector image. Then you can fill it from a color swatch.

Make sure you are in the direct select tool. Click on the path and you should be able to adjust the path that you drew and adjust individual anchor points as you can see below.

You could delete all the color swatches. Then mix your black and create a global swatch of the black color - the white also. When you bring them in as a smart object, they will retain their color values.

Some of the effects that you are using render the image black and white, such as torn edges. So as Bill suggests, the best way to get color, copy the shape and apply a blend mode and opacity setting to get the desired result.
