Lynn, Paraphrasing: To be clear, one CAN create the appearance of a semi-transparent text-box/frame in FrameMaker [in PDF output]. From your initial post, I believe that you were trying to create something like this: This can be done a bit more easily than I initially thought and with scripting, could be quite an easy to use feature. The key is to use an EPS file to import the transparency frame, resize it to the same dimensions/location of the text frame and ensure that it is stacked between the image and the text frame. If anyone is interested, I will create a detailed write-up of this technique.

FWIW, it's not the FM engineering team that looks after the bugbase. Someone has [incorrectly] added a re-direct, so the root of the link to bugbase.adobe.com now points to the Tracker system. I'll ping them again to see if this will [can?] be rectified.

Have you tried specifying version 12 when doing a Save As in Corel Draw? It might be something Corel did in later file .cdr versions that is impacting the OLE rendering in FM. Saving the EPS from Corel really isn't an onerous task. I've worked with thousands of graphics this way over the years. The EPS export settings are sticky, so it's a set it once and forget it route. Use ctrl+E, then Enter and you're done. Properly planned/constructed libraries and/or digital asset management (DAM) tools go along way to keeping graphics organized, findable and maintainable.

Technically speaking, postscript is still an opaque colour model. However, there now is a pdfmark operator that allows Distiller to create transparency from postscript in PDF versions 1.6 (Acrobat 7.0) and greater. This is the SetTransparency pdfmark. So, using postscript text frames in FM does allow one to sneak in the transparency effect, but one has to also manually enable the transparency in the PDF joboptions file [this is not accessible through the Distiller edit interface] by setting " /AllowTransparency true". In the example below, I've created a postscript text frame in the Aframe with the image. The postscript code specifies a green rectangle with a 50% transparent orange rectangle partly covering it. Note the image part in the orange rectangle. As a production tool having the transparent box contain your text, it's really not a practical thing. You would have to postscript code the size of each of your transparent text frames and then overlay the actual FM text frame to fit. Conclusion: for a special effect, transparency effects can [now] be done in FM. However, from a maintenance and production point of view, it's a total PITA! P.S. I haven't explored using pre-defined EPS files with fixed-size semi-transparent rectangular areas to match various text-frame sizes. This could make things a bit easier, but it would still be PITA for non-geeks.

By definition, objects on the Master Page are always behind items on the Body pages. Best you can do is set a run-around on the Master Page object(s) to repel objects on the Body pages. As an awkward work-around, you could copy the item from the Master Page and paste it on top of the Body page. Flow issues may be a problem with content updates.

Hi Lin, FM was made compliant to the corporate standard (as seen in Photoshop, Illustrator InDesign, etc.). There were complaints (resoundly belittled and ignored) during the pre-release program about the lack of colour and scaling for the icons. So this leads one to the conclusion that UX isn't a high priority for Adobe [i.e. be reasonable, do it our way!]. You may get more traction filing this in the official bugs & feature request system (Tracker) at: https://tracker.adobe.com/#/home Note: any user can vote on a bug/feature request to give it more weight, so convincing other Framers to vote on this (and other items), may get things accomplished [or at least noticed].

What's your View > Options > Page Scrolling setting? AFAIK, FM automatically displays the pages out using the Page Scrolling setting and your current Zoom value. Try a different scrolling setting.

Extendscript is FrameMaker's internal scripting language (more or less javascript). There's also a commercial product called Framescript. IIRC, you can get a commercial script from Rick Quatro at Carmen Publishing that will embed the graphics, if you really want to go this route. See this page for his contact info: Carmen Publishing Inc. Alternatively, you could clean up the old FM files by using his ArchiveES script (see: SWREG - ArchiveES ) to consolidate an "archive" version in one location including all of your external scattered graphics. Then your upgrade can be handled a bit better. [There's a packaging utility built-in to the newer versions of FM, but it won't get files scattered over multiple locations, so I wouldn't recommend you use it for this purpose.] I would highly recommend against consolidating everything into a single file for a number of reasons: The file will substantially bloat and moving through the file will become as slow as molasses at forty below. FM still does occasionally corrupt an internal graphic, leaving you with a grey rectangle and no reference as to what the file was or where it came from - good luck finding the replacement to put back in. Updating any graphics could become a PITA, as you have find it internally, and then replace it [whereas, an external graphic just has to be replaced with the same filename in the same location and FM automatically uses that]. Simple maintenance, re-arranging of chapters, updating numbering, etc. is more difficult in a single file compared to using FM's book structure. If you're just looking to consolidate a legacy product in one place, I would still recommend going the Archive route and skip trying to put it all together in a single file.

Just ctrl-click on whatever is in front and send that to the back. You should then be able to select your oval and delete it. If you still can't select it, then keep sending objects in front to back until you get to it. Visualize a stack of plates. Keep moving the top one to the bottom until you get to the plate that you want.

Is the original directory/folder with the files on a network server? If so, network latency may be messing with FM. Pull the files, work with them locally and then push them back when done. This procedure can be automated with a command file.

There are many ways to represent code blocks in HTML, but they are typically quite different than what you would use for publishing to a PDF from FrameMaker. Typically, in HTML, using <pre>...</pre> blocks will preserve the content and you can use the CSS tab-size property for the pre statement to control the number of px used by the tab. However, it's up to the specific browser to display the content, and some may not render/expand a tab character as expected. Here's one reference on what you need in code examples when rendered as HTML: Best Practice for Code Examples You may need to create an alternate FM template to modify your code styles when creating output for HTML-based applications.

There is contact information for Adobe Tech Support on the FM Forum's main landing page. Have you tried doing a MIF-wash of the files to remove any possible corruption? You can use the Book Mif-wash utility supplied in the Sample Scripts & Utilities folder; also read through this thread and links for some background info: How to get Wash Via Mif to work in FM11 . Another problem might be the book file itself somehow being corrupted. You could try creating a new book file and adding the files to that. You could also try to open the book component files individually to see if there's a particular one that is a troublemaker. Then give that a MIF-wash to see if it clears up the issue.

Ian, Did you uninstall the pre-release FM and the Preferences before installing the release version? It's not there, as Stefan says, in my 14.0.0.361 version. Interesting that no mention of this feature being removed has been made in any of the documentation nor in any of the pre-release sessions.

Hi Scott, That certainly is weird in your installation, that the book window is smaller for the PDF setup, but not for any individual file. I don't have any such issues in my installations. Please file this as a bug using the Tracker system [ https://tracker.adobe.com/#/home ] and provide a link to this thread. Please attach some screenshots showing the different wndow sizes. Also, please turn on your rulers before you take the screenshots, so the relative sizes of the windows can be gauged.

Try opening all files in the book first - press the Shift key before you select the File menu and you should see the option to "Open All Files in Book". Now try the PDF Setup for the book.

Quite a number of items have now been moved around and this is causing a bit of havoc with muscle/menu memory in us long-time users of FM. I especially dislike having some functions now solely on context (right-click) menus. The command search helps, but the keyboard shortcut mnemonics no longer make sense as they don't sync up with the new menus. Maybe the plan is to go totally retro back to the old unix CLI in the next release...
