Either that or create a new collection for the best, that you want to use in your new project.  After you create the Best collection, click on your first collection, then drag images from the grid into the new collection. (Drag from the image thumbnails, not the gray border around them.)  (Note that dragging them from one collection to another won't remove them from the first one - to remove, select and hit Delete.) Using a new collection has one advantage over using stars as @dj_paige suggests: you can manually reorder the images in the new collection, independent of the order in the old one. This might be important if you're doing a slideshow, for example. Collections are virtual grouping of images, rather than locations on your hard drive, as folders are. Unlike the others on this thread, I do use folders. I choose in the Import dialog to organize by date, with a date folder within a year folder - and then right after import I right-click on the date folder and add a description. My thinking is "Why not?" It means I can decipher what's on my hard drive, and I can access a shoot very quickly in LR without having to set anything else up.  I agree that subfolders by file type are not necessary, but if they work for you, then again, why not - they essentially act for you like a saved filter. I can see that it would be more useful to have your file type subfolders within event.  I'm having trouble understanding this though: "However, this would mean I only add the Raw directory to Lightroom. The catalogue entry of that dir then reads "Raw" of all my photos. So there's a need to rename the parent directory in LR, but not on the hard drive." I also get rid of exported JPEGs since I can recreate them as needed. I'm in favor of trying to figure out why this is happening, as it's otherwise very convenient to move files from within LR.  Does it say anything more than "File cannot be moved to this location"?  Identify one folder or file where this is happening. If you go out to FInder/Explorer and look where you were trying to move it to, is there already a copy of the file/folder there? Is the folder you are trying to put it into set to Read & Write under Permissions? (Right-click on the folder, Get Info on Mac, Properties on PC.)  What happens if you go outside of LR and move it  - do you get an error? ... View more

I have also experienced this. I find that it helps to reset preferences, but the issue does recur. I'd suggest posting your issue over on Adobe's bug/feedback site - product engineers get involved over there. To reset preferences close LR, then hold down Alt-Shift as you open it and choose Reset. Note that this does set your preferences all back to their defaults, so you'll have to change any you didn't want at the defaults. In LR CC Desktop, in Preferences under Local Storage, choose to store a copy of all originals locally, and specify your Dropbox folder.  When you import photos into LR CC, it does make its own copy.
