If you keep the earlier version of Photoshop as well as the new updated version on your computer, you can still use the plug-ins in the earlier one and update them when you're ready. It's always been like that: the plug-in creators have to update their versions for new OS and PS versions. Some call it progress!

Yeah, there's a lot of misunderstanding about the Creative Cloud. Some people imagine you have to be online to use it, when in fact you download the application(s) on to your computer and use it in the usual way. Adobe just checks periodically that you're up-to-date with your subscription. By the way, you can use the application(s) on two computers – say a desk-top and a laptop or maybe one at work and one at home. They can be either Mac or Windows or one of each. You aren't licensed to use both at the same time.

What is "it" you want to buy from Adobe? If you want software for illustration, the industry standard application is probably Digital Art & Drawing Software - Corel Painter 2017 (not CorelDraw).

By the way, you'll probably get a better colour effect if you're printing to your desk-top inkjet printer, if you print from a RGB document and let the printer's software do the conversion to CMYK or CMYK +.

Try resetting your InDesign preferences: Close and relaunch InDesign, and IMMEDIATELY hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift (Windows) or Cmd + Ctrl + Opt + Shift (Mac), and respond in the affirmative to the dialog asking if you really want to replace the preferences. You must be extremely fast on the keyboard (if you don’t see the confirmation prompt, you were too slow). You may need to do this a couple of times before getting the hang of it!

Did you uninstall InDesign via the Creative Cloud app, and did you run Adobe Cleaner before reinstalling InDesign? Do you have any extra InDesign plug-ins or a font manager utility installed ?

Photoshop is a complex application, I suggest you start learning it with simpler activities. TrainSimple.com and Lynda.com have excellent online video tutorials and there are very good books like the QuickStart Guides and Classroom in a Book series.

For photographs Save As > JPG and select the maximum compression you can get without the quality deteriorating, probably around 6. Make sure your image dimensions are as small as possible. When you want transparency use PNG 24 for photographs, For simple shapes use GIF.

Have a look at Fixed Layout ePub, alternatively, for Mac only devices, iBooks Author. TrainSimple.com and Lynda.com have excellent online video tutorials on optimising video for digital publications and how to create FXL ePubs and iBooks Author. If you're not needing to monetise the book, you might consider InDesign's Publish Online. (By the way, I assume you're proficient in using InDesign and its sister applications like Photoshop, otherwise you'll have a steep learning curve ahead!)
