There is another way to write a straight RGBA file using ProEXR, now built into AE.   Drop your final comp into a new comp and duplicate the layer. For the top layer, apply a Shift Channels with Alpha set to Full On. Keep Red, Green, and Blue as they are. Name this layer RGB. For the bottom layer, apply Shift Channels with Alpha set to Full On. Set Red, Green, and Blue to Alpha. Name this layer A. Write the file using Composition > Save Frame As > ProEXR. In the ProEXR settings, turn off "Include layer composite". Thanks for the files. About half of the EXR files in here are corrupted. For whatever reason, the latest version of the EXR plug-in (http://www.fnordware.com/ProEXR/) can partially read some of those files without popping up an error like the version now shipping with AE does. But I doubt they will be that useful to you as there are a bunch of missing scanlines. You're going to want to re-render those. ... View more

AE writes out 16-bit EXRs by default. If you want 32-bit you have to check the "32-bit (not recommended)" box in the OpenEXR options.   Maybe you're confused because the output module is always 32-bit float. EXR files appear to AE as 32-bit float even when the file itself is 16-bit float. This is not the same as AE's 16-bit color, which is integer, not float. ... View more

OK, I see something similar, although for me only 1 frame was cut off. Still one frame too many. 1. Make 24fps, 160 frame comp in AE, starting at frame 1 2. Render out to EXR sequence 3. Import into Premiere 4. Check frames in the source monitor (all are visible) 5. Re-interpret footage to 24.00 fps (import originally had it at 29.97) 6. Check frames in the source monitor again (one is cut off) It gets a little weirder though. In the source monitor I can drag the time marker to where frame 160 should be, but no frame appears. If I drag the clip into a Sequence it is cut off in the same way, but if I pull the end time of the clip out it reveals the missing frame. I'm going to file a bug. ... View more

Hmmm, I'm not sure what the problem is. I just tried it on a fresh computer with a similar setup and everything worked as expected. One thing is I'd expect the Cryptomatte plug-in to have something entered for Layer and Manifest if you set it up with Create ProEXR Layer Comps, but there's nothing. There's a little section on Cryptomatte in the PDF manual, but it should be as simple as this: 0. Install the ProEXR beta, especially the Cryptomatte and ProEXR AE plug-ins. I also recommend you replace the OpenEXR plug-in that ships with AE. 1. Import your EXR file with Cryptomatte channels. If you're not sure if Cryptomatte is stored in the file properly, try the samples on the Cryptomatte GitHub. 2. Select the EXR footage and run Create ProEXR Layer Comps from the File menu (will be there is ProEXR AE was installed). At this point you should have a Cryptomatte comp set up, among other comps. Try the latest beta, which speeds things up a bit. Also make sure to replace the OpenEXR plug-in with the latest one from the beta. Cryptomatte will render more slowly if there are more pixels holding multiple IDs in the same pixel because it has to check each ID hash in every pixel to see if it's in your selection.  So the content of the file will change the render time, which is unusual for an After Effects plug-in. ... If you are comping multi-channel EXRs, a good way to speed up performance is to turn on the Channel Cache. Unfortunately, AE has a bug where the setting won't stick in Interpret Footage > More Options. A work-around is to edit your preferences and change the "Auto Cache Threshold" in the "OpenEXR" section to "5", which will turn the channel cache on by default for any EXR with at least 5 channels. ...
