Ok, I kept reading and here's what I found: Set the numbering style in the document, not in the book like we've been telling you. Format > Document > Numbering. Pick arabic or numeric. Repeat for the various chapters. Save and close chapters. In the book file, right click each chapter and choose Set up XXX. This is where you tell the book to continue page numbering or restart at 1. Once this is done, update your book. From there, if there are issues, we are relying on the Fm logic we are using every day and any one of us can help you resolve it.

I'm thinking both are conditional text indicators. Fm has always used cross-hatching for table cells. 2015 uses a border color as well on anchored frames. You can control Conditional text at the book level now as well, so hiding these is an easy fix: FrameMaker 2015: Conditional Text at book level | Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2015 | Adobe TV .

Oh my. 5.5 from 1997? I can't imagine anyone else has that version installed in 2016, but I did dig up my old workbook from that era... the command for numbering was Set Up File for the user-created chapters, and was/is Set up Table of Contents or Index for the generated files. So, using your screen shots for Arnis: On each file, use Set Up File to define starting page side and to mark page numbering as Continue or Restart. The chapter doesn't say anything about numbering properties and I don't remember. Maybe it was handled in the document at that point in time. Hopefully, someone else will remember.

I do the same thing as Charles. Work on a copy of the original. Open the book file. Save the book file to update it to 2015. With your cursor in the book window, hold the Shift key and select File > Open all Files in Book.* With your cursor in the book window, hold the Shift key and select File > Save all Files in Book. With your cursor in the book window, hold the Shift key and select File > Close all Files in Book. Done! ~~~ * This is the one that requires that you have enough resources to be able to open all the files in the book. Saving may take a few minutes. That's a good time for a coffee break.

As for the indexing, perhaps the file you are linking to is locked? Follow a link and check out the menu bar. An unlocked file looks like this: A locked file looks like this (note the very different menus): If the file is locked, click the golden padlock icon 7 icons from the left of both toolbars. If the file is unlocked, then it's just a misunderstanding on how to edit an index marker. Special > Marker will open the Marker panel. Keep it open while editing! Follow a hyperlink (Control Alt click a page number) and then don't do anything except direct your eyes to the Marker panel. Somewhere on the page a marker is selected but if you click you will deselect it. Just click inside the Marker panel and edit the marker, or delete it. Save the file, update the book to see the change reflected on the index.

The number size is a feature, not a bug. You can change the look of the numbers independently from the text entry, and you might do so because the links are on individual numbers and you want to highlight them for the reader. You may not have noticed yet, but the separators will also be the wrong size. Change the para tags for both on the IX reference page: For example: changes the page numbers from: to Remember that reference page changes don't take effect until you update your book.

Spencer: In the book window, right+click each file and choose Numbering: Click the Pages tab to set the Page # and Format. Front matter is roman, the first chapter starts on page one. Second and subsequent front matter chapters stay roman, but Continue Numbering from Previous Page in Book. Repeat for each front matter chapter. When you get to the first body chapter, change the format to Numeric, and First Page # to 1. Select the second and subsequent chapters with a click, Shift click: keep the style numeric and Continue Numbering from Previous Page in Book. When you think you are done, select all of the chapters and check the numbering on the bottom row of the book window to confirm that it is correct.

Here's the trick: when you access a command from a menu like Special > Cross-Reference the Cross Reference panel opens up. Most panels dock themselves to the panel group on the right, others may need to be pulled over and docked manually (like Edit > Find/Change). Pick one of the default workspaces from the workspace menu at the top right corner of the FrameMaker window (Authoring, Design and Manage Graphics are three to consider as the starting point, depending on your workflow). Then add the extra panels that you use. Here's how to access the specific panels you mentioned: Special > Cross-Reference Special > Conditional Text > Show/Hide Conditional text View > Pods > Fonts Format > Paragraphs > Designer Format > Character > Designer Table > Format > Designer As you use each feature, the appropriate panel opens. Once you have customized the toolbars, pods and panels the way you like to see them, go to the workspace list at the top right of the FrameMaker window, and choose New Workspace and save your custom workspace with an appropriate name. When I'm teaching new Fm students, we make a workspace called "Learning FrameMaker" shown below (though we collapse the pods at the bottom to get them out of the way until we need them): The perfect workspace is the one that has all of your everyday commands front and center, and removes the ones you never use. When panels "disappear"—which means that someone undocked them and then clicked the close box—just return to your workspace list and select Reset Workspace from the bottom of the list. Every panel that was there when you saved returns to the original position. As for the second part of your question, here are the keyboard shortcuts: Adobe FrameMaker (2015 release) . Hold on to your hat: there are more shortcuts here than most people ever want to know about. But for those of us who love keyboard shortcuts, it's a little slice of heaven.

Hi Dana: That sounds like an issue with the Flow tag and Auto-connect. When Autoconnect is off, the text gets stuck in the frame, and a non-printing black line appears at the bottom indicating the text is overset. If you had the doc we could help you straighten it out, but it sounds like you are back on track.

The post you are referencing appears to be using Inline graphics and not the more complex anchors. Anchors are totally worth exploring—and offer far better controls—but inline graphics are easy to understand without much effort. I think the variations you are dealing with are impacted by the leading (line spacing) values off the empty paragraph you are pasting into: In this first shot, my leading is fixed at 12 pts. The pasted image overprints. Here my leading is set to auto: The pasted image forces the text out of the way. Use this information to set up a paragraph style, called for example, "Anchor" to control the leading, along with any desired indents, alignment and spacing before and after. It will make things easier for you, and you can update the para style and update all the image settings at once.

How bizarre! I'm guessing they come up after you delete them from the reference page and update your book? If they do, the next thing I'd try is to delete the TOC from the book (and rename it in the project folder), and rebuild a basic TOC. It it works, you can import the formatting from this one to the new one.

It's always best to ask each question individually, because sometimes the answers are long and hard to follow. That said: 1. Replace images in an Images folder? When I attempted to replace them with new images by the same names as the previous ones, the document that references them kept crashing when I opened it and did not show the images. This does work but the name must be an exact match. Alternatively, because Fm images are normally linked, you could just open an image in the source program, edit, save and close, keeping the same name. Fm will pick up the updated image the next time the chapter is open. 2. How do I add new referenced images to an Images folder? Some of them will need to be renumbered. If I do all of this in the Images folder, will the document automatically reference the new images? As per the previous answer, Fm will see updated images with the same name, but you will have to replace or add the ones with new names manually. To replace an image: select an image (not the frame) and use File > Import > File. The usual Import button changes to Replace when replacing an existing image. 3. How do I resize an image and the graphics container? I am able to drag the image from the corner to resize it, but not the container. They are independent objects and don't resize together. A workaround is to size the image first, and then tap Esc mp (sequential keystrokes not consecutive) to shrinkwrap the frame to the size of the image. Note: shrinkwrap does two things: it resizes the frame to match the image and it anchors the frame at the insertion point. You can't separate the two, so you will need to update the anchor position (perhaps to below current line, or whatever you normally use) after shrinkwrapping. Alternatively, select the sizing handles on the outer dotted line (the frame edge) and drag to resize. 4. How do I replace a chapter in a book? If I just drag in the new chapter and delete the old one and click "Update Book," will that work? Delete the old one, add the new one, review the book levels controls (position, numbering, pagination, show/hide conditional text, etc. to make it work with the other chapters) and update the book.

Did you add a disconnected page in there somewhere? Is the entire chapter using a single flow tag? For future reference, you could leave the entire chapter set to two columns, and then change the paragraphs on the first page to straddle both columns with Paragraph Designer > Pagination > Across all Columns.
