Have you tried working with DUIK pins? They are actually Shape Layer controllers for anchor points of paths. So your vector stays intact.     Once you have those pins in place you can rotate them and access the tangents of the path to make it loook the way you want.     ... View more

The current version of AE supports three levels of UI appearance. The “Dark” theme offers less contrast.   If you don’t need the newest features for your work you can still install After Effects 24.6.5 (and keep it! – you can only install 1 version lower any given major release) which still has the “Brightness” slider.
